The problem is, the field of physics these days is indistinguishable from science fiction.   The very concept of practical application, or even of experimental confirmation, is foreign to the training of modern physicists.   Ernest Rutherford would have recoiled in horror from the obscenity that is CERN, and modern physics, in general.
