There are no problems in Odd's world- why would you complain about road kill? You drive. Why complain about ruined water sheds? You drive. Why complain about radioactive seawater? You need heat. To help you understand, I will contrast your extreme position with what I REALLY think. You believe the world is fucked up and doomed on its present course, and you believe science is to blame for that. You believe that science has a wrong understanding of just about everything, and this scientific misunderstanding is WHY there are problems, and that if science understood things correctly there would be no problems in the world. I believe that the world is a mixture of blessings and problems. I believe that a great number of the blessings have come from science, such as good treatments for cancer and eradication of diseases like smallpox and a really solid understanding of electromagnetism so that we can do really amazing things with it. I believe that the abuse of technology has led to many problems, such as weapons of insane power and power grabs over valuable resources like oil and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. I believe further that consumers are largely responsible for many of the ills of the world, such as overfishing (to satisfy a Nebraskan's yen for king crab legs) and chemical waste (to make paint and cleaners and plastics that people buy at big box stores) and contamination of food (so that bananas from Ecuador will arrive in your North American grocery store and so that Chicken McNuggets will be available in Boston) and deforestation (so that a family of 3 can live in a five-bedroom, 4000 sq ft house) and oil depletion (so that you can drive three blocks to the convenience store because it's "hot"). The solution to these problems, I believe, is in a combination of better technology (not science, technology) and in a change in consumer habits. I do NOT believe there are no problems in the world, but I do not believe that fingers should be pointed at science for that. I believe that people who do not look at THEMSELVES to see what they should do differently to help solve those problems, and instead spend all their time pointing at OTHERS, are idiots. I believe that science is a living and changing field, with many open questions and things we clearly do not know. I also believe there is a lot we DO know and where the questions are pretty much settled. Knowing the difference is the art of being a scientist. I believe that people who object to a scientific concept either because they don't understand it or because it doesn't "feel right" according to their intuition, are catering to their own ignorance rather than fixing the ignorance. I do NOT believe that science is a closed subject, with all answers in hand. But on the other hand, I think that people who say it's ALL FUNDAMENTALLY WRONG and that we understand nothing correctly might as well also be saying that the earth is not really round and that 2+3 does not really equal five. I believe such people who make those kinds of pronouncements without ever READING about the subject to learn what is known and what remains to be known, are idiots.
