Provided its an infinite non BB universe. A good example of how a system can be sustained by external energy is a resonant system. It vibrates as a response to external stimulus. Place a tray of water on a desk. No obvious raised areas of water. Apply a vibration and standing waves and nodal points of water are observed. Those nodes are atoms. You dont need maths to explain resonance. It is observed. Like interference patterns in water waves. Do you need maths to say that light is a wave if it displays wave like properties? No.
