People need to be made aware that ligo is another space telescope.
It doesn't see in visible light. It doesn't see in X-ray or radio.
It is an entirely new view of the universe. It will (hopefully) show us objects and events in space that we cannot even imagine at this point. That is the siren call of pure research... To discover things that we do not know we are missing.

Luddites and chuckleheads here like Bert and his buddy, BJ, will stand against this. We need to continue on with our work and then point at them and laugh. They are irrelevant

It works much like a radio wave and an electron.

Imagine an electron in free space minding its own business.  Along comes a
radio wave.  The electric field in the radio wave will jiggle the electron
up and down.  Place a wire there and the electrons in it do the same, and 
now you have an antenna.

Now replace the electron with a mass, and the radio wave with a 
gravitational wave.  The gravitational wave will jiggle the mass up and 
down in much the same way.

Oversimplification?  Yes, but so be it.

Why? Because the physics of relativity predicts it.  Soon we will know if
this part of relativity is correct.  That's how science works.

If you are still confused about the behavior of waves, how about thinking
of a cork floating in water when a water wave comes by.

am I right?
That analogy is a metaphor, Odd.
Nothing MOVES, or expands or contracts;
the VALUES at those points simply reflect
the presence of mass IN THAT DIRECTION.
If those VALUES are oscillating, somehow,
though I fail to see how, it simply would
temporarily increase and decrease the
PULL in that direction.
I fail to understand why you think gravity
expands and contracts things?

No, it really is that way, without the rubber sheet.
It's a spin 2 radiation, which behaves that way.
