Not something I'd want a lot of lying about. Maybe if they could get that other oxygen atom loose... but that would use as much energy as was obtained from burning the carbon to begin with. Probably lots of uses for this, but not for removing carbon from Earth's atmosphere.

Yes. I recall England once getting much of its domestic energy from coal gas, i.e. a mixture of CO and hydrogen. Still, it's an interesting idea, even if only as a possible intermediate stage in converting CO2 into something useful, say, methane, using solar or wind power. If the process could be done economically enough, turning CO2 into natural gas would be a useful, carbon-neutral way of storing and distributing energy from such intermittent sources.

I think the fascination with artificial means of turning solar power into chemical energy has something to do with avoiding fertilizer, insects, dirt, having to take care of plants, etc. Humans are a uniquely lazy race of men, prone to put more effort into avoiding a problem than it might have taken to solve.

If we took solar energy to power CO2 conversion machine, then isolate some 0.02-0.03% CO from air and convert it to something more usable...
