Proplem with aliens say 5 million light years away is they might just be using radio waves,and we have to wait 5 million years before they hit Earth.Also in 5 million years we will be to advanced to think of other life in the universe.TreBert

What if the aliens sent their message 5 million years ago?

The reality is that we are alone in the universe. There is a grand total

It is interesting to consider what our human reactions 
would be, if say tomorrow, we started recieving 
clear and unambigious communications from 
aliens. 
Would it much matter it the messages had been sent, 
5 million years ago?
Or 100,000 years ago? 
Or, only 2,000 years ago?

But a fair amount of logic indicates that life 
is likely to exist outside of earth. 
You might want to Google "Rare Earth Hypothisis". 
That information is now 15 years old, 
but still at least somewhat valid.

I read the book Rare Earth when it came out.

When life is discovered somewhere else, I will be impressed. Until then 
it is mere kook fodder.

For me, 
if, or when simple forms of life are found in our solar system, 
I will be interested, but not terribly surprised nor impressed. 

Probably way beyond my lifetime, but if any "life" is 
found outside our solar system, I'll be impressed.
