Fluoride isn't the problem. It's the surfactants. And they aren't
much of a problem, really. The amount typically used when brushing
one's teeth won't be enough to cause any harm.
Fluoride doesn't like to react with anything, so it won't cause
you any harm. Not even if you ingest more than is typically used for
brushing your teeth.
This isn't to imply non-fluoride toothpaste is bad. It simply
won't offer the coating of fluoride on the teeth. Since the coating
only lasts a short time (again, fluoride doesn't like to react, so
it's not going to stay on the teeth for long), there isn't really much
of a benefit to using it.
