An excellent read on this topic is the book 'Rare Earth' by Peter Ward 
and Donald Brownlee.

And of course, Von Neumann did much speculative work in this area.

Talk about serendipity!  I read this post.  Then last night
events turned out that I arrived early for a dinner meeting
and decided to spend the extra half hour looking in the
next door Value Village (a donation driven 2nd hand store).
There in the book section I saw the book 'Rare Earth' by
Peter Ward  and Donald Brownlee.
I bought it, and look forward to reading more in it.
