John MAKES TOTAL SENSE!!! Thank you ------------- John, Serge is 100% wrong. I have no desire to control anyone's mind. You have my word on that. It occurs to me that there are many kooks here who are used to more 'gentle' treatment. Well, you get plenty of gentle treatment. Do you really want more? No. It gets boring. I provide the harsh light of reality that intrudes upon your safe space. I provide the drill sargent attitude of logical and disciplined thought to the chaotic mind of the kook. You're welcome bitches

"Monitor lizard"- not bad. I've never understood why anyone still hangs on to the creaky old SF tropes of extraterrestrials that resemble Earthly lifeforms. Shallow minds, I suppose. Mark L. Not all. I dumped some chemicals and there was this reaction and this
big foamy thing rose up that looked just like the blob! I got away though.
Humanoid extraterrestrials makes a lot of sense though. John worries
about how many fingers they have but that is irrelevant since one has to
ask if they look like the blob just how do they operate the controls on
their ships. Takes a whole new (alien) way of thinking about driving.

At least Niven and Pournelle got around the problem of how elephants could develop technology without hands by having them inherit it from a race that killed themselves off and carved their knowledge into stone. Of course that left unanswered the question of why an advanced civilization would be using stone blocks as an information storage medium. -- Jim Pennino

A friend of mine and I have discussed how to solve the problem of longterm data storage and backup. Historically stone blocks and cuneiform clay tablets seem to have worked quite well. Data density is a bit low, though.

Actually the "stone" BluRay disks are quite promising. I certainly hope
for better than the dye versions which I have myself proved are shit.
Verbatim doesn't seem ready to promise anything yet, however.
