Photons from Sun trying to push a feather would be a waste of time.Keep in mind all the atoms a two inch feater has.Plus only gamma photons do the pushing.TreBert

Herb, you are so ignorant that even Wormley and his YouTube cut and
pastes is smarter than you! You obviously never heard of the solar
barrel boat I invented. It's sails only with the sun light! And it can
never sink!

Probably best not to use aerofoils in this application. They wouldn't
work at all well.

The best solar sail has a mirror surface and is completely flat. In
practice, some compromise on the flatness will almost certainly be made
for engineering reasons.

Hence my comment the original post is childishly simplistic.

While the best of real sails are nowhere near flat.

Not to bring up engineering questions in your "science", but just how
much does COS vary over small angles? Is that important? Don't think so

Not much, so a sail can have some variation from being flat without
suffering too much penalty. What of it?

Can you push a spacecraft with light?

Again, ancient news and childishly simplistic.

Light sails do NOT work like wind sails by any stretch of the imagination.

If photons had mass, maybe.

Sorry Peter, but even though photons don't have mass they do have
momentum! Ask Boinker to explain to you why this is.

Personally, I'd prefer a nice flying saucer to buzz around space than a
huge ancient solar sailing ship! They are SO slow!

   From the quantum mechanical perspective:

     1. photons are emitted (by charged particles)
     2. photons propagate at c
     3. photons are absorbed (by charged particles)

   Photon Momentum
     p = hν/c = h/λ

   Photon Energy
     E = hν = hc/λ

   Can you push a spacecraft with light? YES

In fact, you can even move an asteroid or a comet with light...

Overcoming a space ships inertia using Sun's photons is a waste of time and money.Only Gop Mafia NASA would spend $$$$$ on it.They have and prove what I say.TreBert
