Your link actually supports what Serg io said. The article describes SS as being either frequency hopping, or direct sequence (which is what Serg io was describing).

Upon rereading the article, it describes SS as FHSS, DSSS, THSS, CSS and
combinations of these techniques, which has what the fuck to do with GPS
which operates on fixed, well defined frequencies?

nope. What you are calling a 'well defined frequency' is only the
center of the GPS SS band, and it extends more than 10Mhz on each side.

The center is 1575.42 Mhz, but the spread spectrum bandwidth for P code
is over 20 Mhz wide, 1563 Mhz to 1587 Mhz.

All DSSS are spec'ed out this way, Fo for center of the band and the
spread range.

you can make a basic SS simply by overmodulating an AM signal, a little
or a lot. Use on off keying (OOK) and a 1575 Mhz carrier, and put a
digital stream into just keying it on and off say at 50Mhz, that will
spread it out. [100Mhz wide to capture the first lobe in the receiver]

see spectrum of GPS here, and see the red for P code;
https://www.e-education.psu.edu/geog862/node/1753

It is important to know this, because most of the cellphones use SS now.

google "Code Division Multiple Access" (all SS)

old cellphones used to be "Time Division Multiple Access", but they are
power hogs. That is frequency hopping.

orgionally everyone used "Frequency Division Multiple Access"

[guess jimp is a narrow-bander.]

another link showing GPS is spread spectrum (near bottom)

http://alumni.cs.ucr.edu/~saha/stuff/cdma_gps.htm

http://www.radio-electronics.com/info/satellite/gps/signals.php

https://www.e-education.psu.edu/geog862/node/1768

The GPS signal needed to be secure and resistant to both jamming and
multipath. A spread spectrum, meaning spreading the frequency over a
band wider than the minimum required for the information it carries,
helped on all counts. This wider band also provided ample space for
pseudorandom noise encoding, a fairly new development at the time. The
PRN codes like those used in System 621B allowed the GPS receiver to
acquire signals from several satellites simultaneously and still
distinguish them from one another.
