That's what I was telling you before. It's commercially viable in 
volcanic areas, like The Geysers in California. It's not economically 
viable in areas that are less volcanic.

It's like hydroelectric power is not of economic viability in frozen 
tundra or vast desert areas.

No, it is viable there also with our modern day drilling abilities. We just have not made any attempts.

It is always TECHNICALLY viable to drill. It is not always ECONOMICALLY 
viable to drill. The crust is the thickest under continental mountain 
ranges, where the distance to drill to get to a thermal source may be 20 
miles. The deepest geothermal drills are about 10,000 feet, or about 2 
miles. Those countries that are actively advocating geothermal drilling 
have been quite open about saying that it is prohibitively expensive to 
do in most cases. It's only when you have regions where you can get a 
few hundred degree (C) rise in 500-1000 feet that it becomes 
economically viable.

There is an article in Sept 2013 "Danes drill deep for geothermal energy"
saying they drill to 2.5 kilometers down for heat source.

Now I wonder what the deepest geothermal is so far, for we are now in 2016.

Alright, the deepest geothermal well yet is Kola at 12.3 km. Wikipedia says that as of 2015, geothermal worldwide power amounts to 12.8 GW of which 28 percent is in the USA.

According to GEA only 6.5 percent of global geothermal has been tapped, according to Wikipedia.

This morning I cooked some "cream of wheat" and added milk to make it super tasty. Now, when cooking the wheat, if I had the pot in contact with the coils heat directly moves into the pot, whereas if I suspend the pot above the coils with air in between (analogy to solar radiation) heat is not conveyed directly to the wheat and I must wait a longer time. I suspect from Stefan Boltzmann law this superiority is 5000 to 1 superior in heat for geothermal over solar.

Oh, come on. Really?

Yes, with a stove whose DESIGN relies more on conduction than on radiant 
heat, you are going to have faster cooking by utilizing the conduction. 
This doesn't mean that conduction is inherently superior to radiative 
energy transfer. It means you're using the stove AS IT IS DESIGNED.

The sun supplies about a kilowatt of power on each and every square 
meter facing the sun, without regard to terrain or crust depth. You do 
not have any other equivalent in terms of available energy with 
geothermal at the present time, because there are precious few square 
meters on the earth's surface where you can access that energy. This is 
why geothermal is great for volcanic regions of the world, but not so 
great for where the crust is thick.

Well, that is a good summary of it. Conduction heat is superior to radiation heat. Now is that found in the Stefan Boltzmann law and is conduction heat 5000 times greater of a heat transfer than radiant heat.

As to square meters, we see that the Solar Power Plant in Nevada takes up about a thousand more land area than does the geothermal The Geysers in California. So here again we see that geothermal is thousand times more superior than solar.

Geothermal energy has health and environment problems of it's own that
most people overlook.

I should point out that when talking about 'shallow' geothermal, at least in regard to deserts as opposed to active volcanoes, one is actually talking about solar thermal energy. It is the heat of the sun at heats the desert sands. The sand just acts as storage for that solarthermal energy.

Thanks for that information. I am not aware of any existing shallow geothermal plant in a desert region that uses some of the radiant sun heat. Can you name one such plant?

The Dead Sea in Palestine & Israel is the closest I can think of for a shallow desert geothermal power station.

I think you'll find Iceland a good case history. Right now, Iceland 
derives 0.1% of its energy needs from fossil fuels.

Also, you may be interested in learning that buoys have been designed to 
convert ocean surface wave moment to electrical power, each buoy 
generating 250kW.
