Why do you think the engines were not turned into flying debris within milliseconds of impact lke the rest of the airplane? Turbine engines do not have large cast iron engine blocks and ingesting ANY debris while running at full power causes them to self destruct in a spectacular fashion. The debris from an engine would have spread over a limited radial extent as the craft impacted the wall. And the physical integrity is not necessarily destroyed. The physical integrity of the engine as an engine is destroyed. The rotor is one of the very few parts of a turbine engine that has much substance. The majority of the internal volume of those great big engines is air and rather fragile fan blades. -- Jim Pennino
