In addition to the above "Albedo Effect", the heat of fusion (melting) effect makes the arctic (and Antarctic) warm faster as the ice melts. It takes about 100 times more energy to warm ice by 1 deg C across its melting point (melt it) than it does to warm ice or water by 1 deg C at any other temperature. The ice caps act as a "firewall" to warming. After all the ice has melted, that 100 times energy is available to heat the water and air. --------------------------------------------------- Michael J.
