Yawn.

Arm waving speculation and NOT a blinding advancement in battery tech.

No mention of energy density.

No mention of operational life time.

No mention of cost.

No mention of required infrastructure much less an estimated cost.

Find the journal papers.

> No mention of operational life time.

They have to run the prototype for a while to know what that's going to be.

> No mention of cost.

Probably quite high because it's a prototype. Mass-manufactured ones
with an optimized design derived from experience and experiments with
the prototype will be much less expensive, of course.

> No mention of required infrastructure much less an estimated cost.

Infrastructure *was* mentioned, and after that you've begun looping like
a stuck record.

Or how to generate the electricity to recharge the battery.

just going back to gasoline would save all that battory electrolite
replacement cost. Bet that is a $1000 task at a dealership.

No problem, we will use Coal, Natural Gas, and Oil fired power plants.

After all, as long as we locate them somewhere they can't be seen, then
consumers can be sold on the idea that the power they are buying is
green.....just as they do with solar panels and Electric cars.

Solar is here, now. Heck, in many places fossil fuels are largely out.

Nothing even in the labs yet that could accomplish that, much less making
into main stream commercial use within that time frame.

I'm dying to know what you're basing your 10-15 year prediction on. Are

Well, they got them battery powered locomotives in foreign countries
what run diesel electric or overhead electric out on the main line but
shut off the diesel or disconnect from the catenary and run on battery
in the urban areas, power gaps and in tunnels. Or sometimes switch
people and cargo to battery trams and buses. But that's all foreign
stuff. Americans don't like foreign stuff. Especially trains. Trains
limit your freedoms.

Actually, they have ONE prototype in service, and let's look at the current
and projected specs.

"The train that ran on the weekend can go about 40 km (25 miles) on a
charge, but future version will be able to run for up to 100 km (62 miles).
"

https://www.engadget.com/2018/09/17/bombardier-battery-powered-electric-train/

Yea, Let's have a train that can run 62 miles before it can't go anymore,
and then would have to run on electric for several hours in order to allow
the batteries to recharge.

In short it's good only for relatively short hops between electrified rail
networks.

Then, it would almost certainly be far cheaper to close those gaps than it
would be to have a battery run engine.

So, I would put it down as a curiosity at this point, and I doubt it will
ever become a prevalent form of motive power anytime in the next couple of
decades.

15,000 out of 4.5 Million = 0.3%

Excuse me, if I don't see that as anything other than a fad at this moment
in time.

Sounds good until you remember that, at best, with current technology panels
are energy neutral.

Which does nothing to actually help you replace your energy sources, much
end the impact of the mining operations on the environment.

Sounds nice, but it will be a LONG time before that happens.

Sure, and then one sandstorm, wipes out your solar farm, and passing nomads
rip out the wiring, and make off with the panels to sell for a few bucks in
a market somewhere.

No, coal. You need coal to make steel. Otherwise all you get it iron.

So it won't stay working in the event of a "Mad Max" post-apocalyptic
scenario. Neither will fossil fuels, since the motorbike-riding warlord
gangs will keep siphoning gas out of your tank and stealing stuff in
that case as well.

You need *carbon* to make steel. It doesn't have to come from coal, let
alone from *burning* that awful dirty stuff.

What has this to do with mining equipment?

Yet again, nothing to do with mining equipment.

Nope, not a "post-apocalyptic scenario" a typical scenario in most third
world locations where the mines are.

Why are you asking kensi? Scout's the one who sent this branch off on a
tangent.

Asking renewable energy engineers to solve social problems is obviously
stupid, which is probably why you would do that.

That being said: maybe if we genuinely *invested* in the countries that
had resources we wanted, instead of subjugating and exploiting them and
*calling* that "investment", we wouldn't have these problems?

Because kensi keeps posting irrelevant crap.
