Or a bank forecloses. With so many bank foreclosure these days, many houses just sit unoccupied for long periods of time. Of course houses with unpaid tax bills will eventually be foreclosed for taxes. But Portland has been notoriously slow to make such foreclosures, letting thing drag out interminably, and houses sit unoccupied. Sometimes the homeless break in and occupy them for a while. Sometimes the house become used a drug houses. But overall they are a problem. > > Double-A AA GOPer Mafia are taking these homes over in Florida as I type. Also I know a few in S.Carolina. jimp@specsol.spam.sux.com writes: >If the ownership is unknown, how do they know who to send the property >tax bill? There are certainly legal procedures to follow for such a case, perhaps legal notices in the newspaper, or even the bill simply addressed to "Owner" and the property's address. Regardless of who if anyone owns it, if the bill doesn't get paid, the town/county will eventually acquire ownership through unpaid tax liens, depending on state law. I have seen "Owner Unknown" when looking through my town's property records. In fact, one was almost directly across the road from me. (a small undevelopable triangle of swampy land BTW)
