During WWII, the American hand grenades were shaped like
baseballs and thrown in the same manner.

However, the Germans had "stick grenades" and they were
thrown differently:

Is there an advantage to the stick grenade in terms of
throwing accuracy or distance?

Which design performs better and why?

-------------

It was said that the American hand grenade was designed that way due to the popularity of baseball in America. American boys were used to throwing a baseball.

However, I would imagine the kraut design was superior as far as distance goes.

I've thrown a few American hand grenades, I've never thrown a kraut grenade

The handle of german grenades has IMHO the same positive distance effect
as javelin throwers for javelins, as both are prolonging the arm length.

But I suppose the main reason for the shape
is the grenade design, with the primer in the handle.

Im not sure if this has relevence, but when I used to camp out
in the woods I always had a bowie style knife for odd jobs and
I could usually get a true shot with it held by the tip of the end
of the blade. So it would flip over and over very rapidly after it was
thrown at a local tree trunk.

The handle on the grenade essentially makes your arm longer to give the
grenade more velocity. Same idea as the atlatl (spear-thrower) used by
some primitive tribes.

The key to grenade throwing is not to be gay and "throw like a woman".

Not really. Where BJ and his little analogy fails is that a better comparison to an atlatal for a hand grenade would be throwing it with a lacross stick

Really. You should stick to writing and quit trying to pretend you know
science. No wait! You don't even know how to spell atlatl! Don't even
have the intelligence to copy it out of my post! Sheesh! You have a bad
case of the Glaziers!

Lacross stick too long for one thing and it does not matter if the
atlatl is thrown with the object (grenade) or remains in the hand
(spear)the whole principle is an arm extension increasing the tangential
velocity due to a larger radius combined with the angular velocity.

You are getting as bad as "professor" Wormley. He can't spell for shit
either, but then he doesn't claim to be a "wordsmith".

It comes out of my brain just fine... it's the fingers. The fingers
don't type what they are supposed to. You read what you just typed
and the brain corrects it just fine. It's only after pushing the send
button that the brain kicks in to editor mode.

So, ok, "professor" Worm Liar Sam... a student walks into your
classroom/office and gives his Sadi Carnot Efficiency computation, via
email, for the Climate Change Engine Cycle. He/She asks you to open
the email now, right before his/her presence. The numbers are more
wrong than the words describing them. The student insists it was a SW
autocorrect issue, had to be, dog ate homework, and he/she had
actually computed the correct to 13 decimal places requested
efficency. What grade do you give your student "professor" Sam Worm
Sorry Liar? What grade Grade GRADE do you Asshat Sam assign him/her?

Lesson: Stop hitting send Send SEND. Read one-liners before sending?! Duh?

Given the mass and typical velocity of hand grenades, drag is of no
significance.

Have you ever held a real hand grenade?

Pros: Easier to throw, can throw farther, and don't roll on the ground.

Cons: Heavier and bigger, can carry fewer, and more complex to make.

All those drawbacks could be eliminated by providing a grenade throwing
"stick" that could be used to lob spherical grenades, if it were judged
necessary to do so.

Of course, in today's military most soldiers carry grenade launchers
which can beat any hand throw.

Yet one more thing to carry; I take it you have never been in the military
and have no clue what a pain in the ass all the stuff you have to carry is.

Also, I for one would not want to have to pull the pin on a grenade,
screw around getting it onto the end of the stick and hope it doesn't
fall off before I can throw it.

Not most, but a lot.
