Did the eclipse experiment actually demonstrate that light is bent by gravity? Is there another explanation? (ie. the sun's atmosphere) Wouldn't gravitational lensing be much more evident if gravity actually did bend light? Can the limited amount of gravitational lensing that is evident be explained by stars having atmospheres? James McGinn

The problem with this thinking, Jim, is that the Sun's corona has a density of only 10^{-16} g/cm^3, which is essentially a better vacuum than can be made here on Earth. Compare this to the density of air on Earth, which is about 10^{-3} g/cm^3 at sea level.
This means that almost all starlight that passes through the Sun's coronal atmosphere without encountering any matter at all.

Some excellent questions James. On Saturday, November 24, 2018 at 2:46:06 PM UTC-5, James McGinn wrote: > Did the eclipse experiment actually demonstrate that light is bent by gravity? Yes. > > Is there another explanation? (ie. the sun's atmosphere) Atmospheric source is too thin. Also such refractive bending is different for different wavelengths. So stars would smear. Newton's corpuscular theory also predicts bending of light, but by a smaller amount than what is observed. > > Wouldn't gravitational lensing be much more evident > if gravity actually did bend light? You are implying an assumption an assumption that gravity does not bend light. The evidence it that gravitational lensing does happen. > > Can the limited amount of gravitational lensing that > is evident be explained by stars having atmospheres? > > James McGinn Why do you call it "limited"? there are plenty of examples. As for the second part, already answered. The results from atmospheric bending do not match what is observed. Stars observed in solar eclipse are still sharp images, just displaced. And the measured displacement matches the calculated value from Relativity, and not from refractive or classical calculations. HTH. Enjoy. Ed

So is claimed by the e=mcc=hv Einsteinan devils, as a "proof" for their ridiculous theories of relativity. > Is there another explanation? (ie. the sun's atmosphere) Of course this is the obvious explanation. I have been making it since 2003 or earlier. The Sun's outer atmosphere is acting as an optical lens. What is a simple optical phenomenon is being passed off as proof of GR. Heh. > Wouldn't gravitational lensing be much more evident if gravity actually did bend light? Gravity does not bend light, but appears to from the moving Earth platform. So when the light goes straight away from the Earth - really - it APPEARS to be bending from the Earth platform, and this happens because the Earth too is moving. Now, this APPARENT bending of light is said to be caused by Earth's gravity. Which is false. Similarly for GPS - the maths works because of conformal mapping (keeping the Earth still and twist up the maths), a great case of two wrongs making a right. > Can the limited amount of gravitational lensing that is evident be explained by stars having atmospheres? Stars are too far away, James. We need to know what is what right beneath our feet. Is the centre of the Earth, Sun, Jupiter or any other large body with a magnetic field very cold, or very hot? Cheers, Arindam Banerjee > > James McGinn

> > Cheers, > Arindam Banerjee > > > > James McGinn ============================= the Eddington experiment was not done too far from us … as you mumble 2 listen to what the old man is telling you ------------------- photons has mass -the only mass and that is the key why light bends next to a big mass !! not even f en curved space ================= Y.P ============
