What I and most users want is for the program to be operational from the get-go and for it to be possible to configure it otherwise after it is installed. Instead, Linux programs are often installed but unusable until the user figures out how to configure them. It's not a matter of choosing which directory to save the end result in either; some programs ask users to make a selection of things he or she has no idea about. > -- "Attaching the Linux name to a product essentially kills that > product. I'll be honest and say that I don't like the installation scheme either, but I understand why Microsoft did it. I remember the old days where you could just copy a DOS folder over to a new hard disk and you would be copying the configuration files as well as the program with one command. Once Windows 95 was released, doing so no longer worked as registry entries were missing and other dependencies. It made things annoying, but it definitely had an effect on making piracy a lot more difficult. This is where OS X's approach is interesting. -- Slimer

However, the last version, from 2006, is still quite functional. Patches are available from some (not all) distros to keep it up to date. Text has always been the lingua franca of Linux (and its predecessor Unix). Linux text editors have always had the extremely useful text highlighting feature, as well as other features, that make Microsoft editors look like shabby trash in comparison. In fact, because of their extreme functionality, Linux text editors can be considered actual "desktops." From Cooledit, for example, I can, among other things, send email and compile/debug programs.

There really isn't "one editor to rule them all". For example: I have a colleague who swears by vim. I've used joe since 1992. Once asked him if vim could accept different key bindings, to which he said "yes". Then I asked him if I could make it behave like joe. He looked at me like I was from Mars. :P -- -v Kernel:4.3.0-sd Desktop:Xfce 4.12.2 Distro:Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela
