It's human wiring that does it. Humans go where humans look.
It's hardwired into the brain. If you don't want to got to an
object DON'T look at it. Look away. It's hard to do sometimes
but you MUST look away. If you stare at a pole and say, "Oh no,
I don't want to hit that thing," then chances are you WILL hit
it.

I learned that bullshit when I was racing professional motocross
in my youth. Don't want to hit that nasty rut or bump or other
rider on the track then look away and look at where you want
to go.

Another think I learned that always gave me first place to the
first corner after the gate fell was NEVER to think about popping
seeing the gate go down. Always think about popping the clutch.

A less than pro rider will be thinking about seeing the gate go
down then he has to go to step two which is popping the clutch.
That extra step will lose you about half a second.
