There are, and have been, clock synchronization systems that work over the power lines for institutions but the only thing they guarantee is that all the clocks in the building agree. It is only in the past few years that such systems could be synched to an accurate time standard, such as GPS, and be guaranteed that they all agree AND are showing the correct time. It would be highly unlikely that in 2001 clocks in different places would be set to the same time better than about plus or minus 5 minutes or so. FYI I have a so called atomic watch that sets itself periodically via the WWVB broadcasts and is accurate to the true time to less than a second. I seldom see a clock anywhere that is within 5 minutes of my watch and many are much worse. That the time on the Pentagon clocks and the FAA clocks were different in 2001 is NOT surprising to a sane person. -- Jim Pennino

Exactly. My high school had synched clocks like this. It was done with a signal injected onto the power system. I could even hear it (a 400 Hz tone) since certain electric devices such as fluorescent lights seemed to convert that signal into sound, and they always sent the signal shortly before the bell rang, so I knew when the bell would ring even though our clocks didn't even have second hands. I also saw it on an oscilloscope once, a small higher frequency sine wave riding on the 60Hz power sine wave. These clocks, while all agreeing with each other, usually were slow (behind most other clocks). They were probably set to the principal's watch or something. Sometimes, daylight saving time would begin or end but they forgot to set the master clock and the clocks would be an hour off for half the morning. When they did set it, the hands would visibly move.

My daughter has a friend whose mother, a flight attendant, was supposed to be on Flight 11, but swapped with another flight attendant. Sarah, do you mean 20 minutes from the first attack or 20 minutes from when the 9/11 Commission says a 757 struck the Pentagon since the times are about 6 minutes apart.
