This is bullshit. A modern fast attack submarine can do Ahead Full at
snorkel depth no problem. That's 25 knots. They could attempt Ahead
Flank (33 knots), but the screw would cavitate. I know this for a
fact... I served on one. You're talking about a 36 inch ventilation,
air induction and exhaust stack... not fragile in any sense.

Even as far back as 1947, when snorkels were first introduced to US
submarines (the first was USS Irex SS-482) in the GUPPY Submarine
Conversion Program, the submarines could do 19 knots at snorkel depth,
although they were only rated to do 17.2 knots.

The only subs that had a limited speed due to snorkel breakage were
the German VII and IX U-boats during WWII, with snorkels that folded
forward to store in a hull recess. The later telescopic masts were
built much tougher, and were partially protected by the conning tower.
