the number is fixed within the theory.
The answer is still unknown as to which theory will ultimately
be the one to unify the many aspects of nature.

The selection of dimensions seems to be based on properties of symmetry.
At least, based on my limited knowledge, that is how it appears to me.

I admit the mathematics is above my skill level. But it does suggest
a certain beauty. String theory needs more work, as admitted by
leaders that are developing it.
