James, are you a fan of John Barth's? Good writer, if maybe a bit
weird. Giles, Ebenezer Cooke, all good fun.

I just stumbled across this ancient but evidently still active thread,
so I thought I'd answer for myself:

A dozen ways of detecting that pesky water vapor come to mind, but I
won't go into them. It's easier than that.

When air bearing water vapor comes into contact with something cold, the
water vapor turns back into water. You can see it with the unaided eye.

No complex, difficult-to-understand equipment required.

The windshield of an air-conditioned car on a humid day, the outside of
a glassful of an iced drink. Admit it: you've seen it happen.

You made a mistake, and seem to think the loss of face from being dumb
less painful than the loss of face from being wrong. That's weird.

I've never disputed that water vapor can/will condense. My dispute is with the brain-dead assumption that the form of the water in clear moist air is gaseous. Gaseous H2O cannot exist at the low temperatures that are available in the atmosphere. Therefore the phase of the water in water vapor is liquid, not gas. Unfortunately the world is populated by a bunch of dumb SOBs who assume that since clear moist air is clear that, therefore, the form of the water therein must be gaseous. These retards have dismissed the possibility that it might be comprised of H2O nanodroplets that are so small as to be invisible.

Why the fuck you retards have such a hard time comprehending this simple distinction is anybody's guess.

> No complex, difficult-to-understand equipment required.

If you can't decisively determine whether the molecules of H2O are multimolecular or monomolecular then what is the fucking point?

Everybody has seen this happen, you fucking mental retard. The problem, you stupid SOB, is that nobody has been able to verify that the moist air thereof contained monomolecular gas molecules of H2O or multimolecular nanodroplets of H2O.

Please make a special effort to maintain this simple distinction so that I don't have to re-explain it to you fucking over and over again, you fucking imbecile.

Done long ago. Dispersion rates depend strongly on mass. It is very easy to
measure the dispersion of water and see that the measured rates are only
compatible with monomolecular water. Do catch up.

How long ago? Was it before the invention of writing.

Meaningless.

Like you have a clue, fucking liar.

I don’t think so. It’s a well established empirical law that is fully
accounted for in kinetic theory.

Graham’s law notes that the rate of dispersion is proportional to the
square root of the mass of the particles dispersing.

The mathematical expression is simple:
R1/R2 = sqrt(M2/M1)
Which immediately leads to a simple expression for finding a particle’s
mass from measured dispersion rates:
M2 = M1*(R1/R2)^2

This has been experimentally verified with literally hundreds of pairwise
combinations, like N2 and O2, sulfur dioxide and argon, xenon and neon,
carbon tetrachloride and ethanol. This was the basis for uranium 235
enrichment by diffusion during WWII.

What’s interesting about this law is that it doesn’t matter whether the
particle is an atom, a molecule, or a clump of molecules. All that matters
is the mass of the diffusing thing.

Applying the second formula for any — I repeat, any — mix of water and
another gas, allows you to fix the mass of the water particles by knowing
the mass of the gas atoms/molecules and measuring the relative dispersion
rates. The answer comes out to be 18 g/mole. This is in experimental
support for the water being monomolecular and starkly counter to your
hypothesis of water microdroplets.

Data, not imagination. I know the above is wasted on you, because you are
mentally ill. But facts are facts, regardless of the fantasy world you
have constructed.

This is more than interesting, it's downright miraculous!

Praise the lord!!!

Provide a reference for this miraculous declaration, you lying son of a bitch.

And a simple fact from the 19th century.

I see. So not only are you uneducated on the basics of fluid behavior, but
you are incapable of lifting a finger to look something up to help correct
your ignorance.

I’ll remind you of your status, Jim.
You are the one that is uneducated and ignorant.
No one owes you an education or to correct your ignorance, even if you
cheep loudly like a helpless, featherless baby bird.
You are completely incapable of reading or even moving a mouse to click a
button, and you expect others to do that for you. Why, I don’t know.
You dare people to try to convince you of simple things, and you think
somehow it is a victory to resist being convinced of simple things.
No one — I repeat, no one — will care that you will continue to be
helpless, ignorant, and mentally ill.

LOL. So, according you Bodkin people in the 19th century didn't know the difference between a solid, liquid, and a gas.

Jeff,

Why don't you go defrag your hard drive or reinstall windows or something.

Also, every once in a while you should comb the crumbs out of your beard.
And would it kill you to take a shower? I mean, come on.

Pick up your high school chemistry book.
Oh I forgot, you didn't graduate from there either.

Reminds me of a true story:

There used to be this old lady neighbor I had whose grass I'd mow. One
day she's telling me how she was old enough she didn't have to pay her
electric bill! What?? Then I talk to other old ladies in neighborhood
and they are all mad saying she got the city to pay her electric bill
but they all knew she had hundreds of thousands of dollars in the bank!

And then some time later I'm walking by and what do I see but the little
old lady coming out of her house with a big strapping "attendant" in
white outfits on each arm. They walked her to a short bus. Put her in
and drove off! I never saw her again! In a short time some lawyers had
offices in what used to be her house!

Moral of story: Free stuff from government not as free as you think.

So if you have the money, pay your bills or you may get a quick trip on
the short bus or worse, like Bert have to drive your old van to
Kalifornia where everyone is nuts (liberals) and nobody cares how much
you steal from the government.

Nevermind dispersion rates. The simple partial pressure for an ideal gas (which small partial pressure gases obey), tells you what the gas "particles" are made of. It is simply

PV = nRT.

V/n = RT/P.

The value of V/n is 22.4 L/mole at 273 K at 1 atm. For partial pressure less than 1 atm, the equation is just as predictive. The molar volume at a partial pressure of 0.1 atm is 224 L.

So if we want to know if helium exists as single atom molecules, we weigh it. At 273 K and 1 atm, 22.4 L of helium weighs 4 grams (neglect buoyancy). So it's clearly single atoms. If you do that for oxygen, though, you get 32 grams, or two moles O per molar gas volume. So oxygen gas is O2. Do it for ozone and you get 48 grams.

The technique was used to find out about the molecules of gases in mixes before mass spectroscopy came along. Do it for chlorine and you find 22.4 L contains 71 grams, so it's evidently Cl2.

What about water, which is liquid at room temp? It has a vapor pressure, however, and it is the same in air as in vacuum, so obviously the same species are present in both cases. The vapor pressure at 37 C (body temp) is 47 Torr or 0.0618 atm. The density of this gas in vacuum is 44 grams per cubic meter (1000 L). This is also the water content of saturated air at 37 C (of course).

http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/Kinetic/watvap.html

Thus for 44 grams H2O we have n mols = PV/RT = .0618 atm (1000 liter)/[310 K* 0.0821 L*atm/mol*K] = 2.40 mol particles = 44 grams. So 1 mole = 44/2.40 = 18.3 g.

Why not exactly 18 g per mole particles? Because wups, we are seeing non-ideal behavior this close to 0 C, and a compressibility Z = 1.02. At temperatures of about 95 C the compressiblity goes to 1.0 and molar mass from PV/RT decreases to 18.0 grams.

In any case, 18.2 grams per ideal molar gas volume is quite large enough to show that water gas at 37 C doesn't go around even as dimer molecules, and certainly not droplets! Such behavior would give us calculations with the ideal gas equation of >>> 18 grams per mol of H20 gas, not 18.3.

Thanks for the review, but FYI, I'm an atmospheric physicist.

Right. It has a vapor pressure. Not a gas pressure. A vapor pressure.

Vapor is liquid.

and it is the same in air as in vacuum,

No. At that temperature in a vacuum H2O is gaseous. Consult a H2O phase diagram.

so obviously the same species are present in both cases.

This is neither true nor obvious.
