Thanks for the advice.  No, I do not prefer Fortran, though I have worked with it.  I never learned Visual C++, but it might be fun to learn.

What is a good source of information describing the access method, protocols, and addressing formats for sending and receiving posts to and from newsgroups from a program?

Thanks for the info.  I have a fairly new laptop.  But I will probably have to lay in a land line to have access from home.  As soon as I get rid of my storage locker, I may have enough money to do this.

I've recorded lots of macros in VBA automating little excel tasks. I have also written fully fledged programs in VBA to help do my job done faster and better (in my previous job). That's all I know about "macros". Small little programs mostly created by the application itself when users record repetitive tasks in them. Do you mean something else by "macros"?

I have a Dell Optiplex (745). Has it already become a dinasaur? :-) 

My internet connection is about 12/1.3 download/upload mbps.

C00l! Worth every dollar if you can put them into good use. I cannot watch anything above 1080p quality in youtube without annoying pauses, let alone 4k. 

I got my Dell computer for $75 last year from a lone guy in a lonely shop in back allies of a lonely industrial area of the town, via craigslist. When I called him first question he asked was, "How many do you want?" It's that kind of computer. You know, for schools, churches, .. . He put it together starting from the time I hung up the phone to the time I got there. I saw nobody in that area. There were cats outside his shop and a few more inside. He had rescued them. He said he rescues horses too. 

I added an nvidia video card later, $30 from eBay. The machine has a 2 cpu processor, 2.66 ghz. Slower than the one I had before but has been good enough for me. 

I also added a 1 tb hd $59 from eBay. Even this is too much storage for me as I cannot find good enough movies to fill anything like that. Last night I pirated "Dead Pool" which supposedly sold very well recently and after watching it I couldn't believe how stupid it was. Good movies have become quite rare. 

My USB stick only saw one type of use. Sneaking company data out to my home. This was strictly against their rules. I did it on occasions that I needed to write programs processing such data. I wrote them over weekends at home. Made my job a piece of cake. I even charged a co-worker once for letting him use one of my programs one time only :-) It reduced a hated 3 hours of endeavor down to about 15 seconds of watching the work done on screen. 

I'm not into computers. I'm into silly cheap things, like used cheap guns! Hehe :) I think I got the addiction after reading about horrible stuff that happened to folks caught without guns when they needed them. The Sandy Hook deal, Samantha Koenig, etc.

Cool. In the early 1990s I wrote a program for converting calendars (Gregorian to Persian to Lunar to Julian and vice all versa! - you'd need it if you studied Iran's history). Wrote it in C. And the damn thing still runs on my win7 OS (Dell Optiplex machine). I can give you a copy of that to see for yourself. So I expected your program to run on just one earlier version of windows.

I enjoy life by relaxing, and relax by repairing things when I get a chance and when I successfully do so. Nothing else seems to be relaxing me. I miss recreational programming so much..

Rolf, it's not an "infinity" switch. It's an "infinite" switch.

And of course it isn't a switch at all, but a control with "infinite"

resolution (supposedly). No, if you hum "Om" in it's presence it does not

put you in touch  with "infinity". Please be careful and unplug your stove

before working on it. Capishe?
