Practically since styrofoam was invented, people have been going on about how it would contaminate the environment forever since it isn't biodegradable. Well, it turns out that it is. Just as ruminants can digest cellulose thanks to bacteria living in their guts, the humble mealworm can digest styrofoam because it similarly hosts bacteria that break the polystyrene down enough that the worms can thrive on it: http://www.csmonitor.com/Environment/2015/0930/The-secret-to-composting-Styrofoam-Mealworms Now, the researchers are looking for a suitable marine analog to the mealworms to address all of the plastic in and on the oceans. This is all due to a 2009 discovery by a High School student (who seems to have been edged out of the current work), but sadly, not one in the U. Take some of the solvents that you have at hand, like IPA, Paint stripper, Nail polish remover. Turpentine, Acetone, MEK, etc and check which one "eats" fast into the Styro foam Then put as much of the chosen solvent into a glass jar and stick Styrofoam pieces into it... which will dissolve very fast. Stir and repeat till you have the right viscosity. ... ... and there you have you glue/adhesive... for free and faster than a trip to the store.
