It's really quite simple. Since gravity is not a force it is a 
distortion of space in the presence of a mass. You *must* understand

As far as I can find, Einstein never claimed that gravitational waves existed.  I think he may have written a paper on the question, but it has apparently been lost (purposely disposed of?).
