He engaged in a lot of shady 'business'. But what ended his carpetbagging shenanigans was actually that Bert was being served court papers for many overdue debts. He was drunk when the sheriff came to his door, Bert put up a struggle and was subsequently arrested and taken into custody. There his story turns to how poorly he was treated by the police. As a result Bert hi tailed it back on up to Massachusetts where he landed a sweet gig living at a rent subsidized old folks home until he got run out of that place and now he's with you in Cali. We're just glad to get him off the east coast
