and the Moon Needs a big Magnet.

Headgear containing Magnets will be issued to each moon goer.

remember folks, if they are talking about going to Mars, they are only 
trying to get federal funding.

I believe that Elon Musk is sending two passengers up to orbit the moon 
next year. All you need is money for a ticket, John. You claim to be 
healthy enough. That way, you can see for yourself by first-hand 
experience whether it is possible. That may be the only way you'd ever 
be convinced.

But then again, some people would avoid doing this so that they don't 
ever get convinced.

I made a calculation for a shield. A current will loop around Mars using
two moons. Each moon is charged with 5 Coulombs at a trillion volts.
That generates 10^-17 Tesla for the B field in some regions near Mars.
That is too weak, compared to Earth's 10^-6 Tesla.

The proposal is to deflect the solar wind, without adding energy to it.
Therefore, the wind will press the magnet outwards; the magnet must be a
little inwards from L1, because of that and of radiation pressure.

no, the fields vary as d^n  where n is between 2 and 4, and n is also a 
function of d, and orentation of the field.

field strength is *the key* design requirement, it drives the rest of 
the design.

cooling is to lower copper coil losses, high temp superconducters are 
not yet reliable for this, unless you have a url to a 1 T magnet using 
one...

  I think it gets down to watts, if 100 W it probably could be done, if 
2000, probably not.

but all that is limited by # Watts used, and if it is in sunlight, which

you evade the question, how much heat is generated by the super-cooling 
refrigeration unit for a 1 T field at 100,000 miles ? ( leave "T at 
100,000 miles" as a variable)  How many Watts does will the 
refrigeration unit take to keep the unit cool?  how many solar panels ? 
how much storage capacity is needed ?  How much refrigeration fluid is 
lost each year ?  (NASA has supercooled stuff in flight, limited life 
time due to fluid loss)

supercooling refegeration, not sure about application to a magnet, but

The magnetic field intensity H is not a (1 / R^n) type of law. 
The B field, flux density also is not 1/R^n .

Magnetism is not distance dependent, it depends on N, number 
of paired charged particles which can change with 
distance depending on material shapes.

The number N of paired charged particles in the magnetic loop,
and the relative velocity between them determines H and B.

B is proportional to N v / v1

where v is relative velocity and v1 is a constant 1 meter per second.

Yes, that is an approximation for a point-like situation. Mars
and Earth are not point-like. A North and South Pole as far apart as
8000 miles is expected.

A Martian apparatus for making a magnetic shield can use the knowledge from
the book about non-rotating magnetic actuators and shields. See Book:
"Linear Electric Actuators and Generators" by Boldea and Nasar
Cambridge University Press (September 26, 2005)

It shows that the materials and shapes determine the gap.
Magnetic linear motors for shielding Mars will need a "gap"
of a thousand miles instead of the mm range in the Book.
The moon Phobos is over a thousand miles, so one coil on
Deimos and one on Phobos can focus the charged cosmic ray ions.
The apparatus will pair a proton on Phobos with an electron
on Deimos, for an example. The velocity between them will make
the field go past some areas that are "swept safe". Then
the astronaughts can go farming, for all they will care.
But when the moons set, beware.

but the L1 generator is a point, less than 0.01 miles across, then over 
100,000 miles away.

it can be an electromagnic, only the electrical generator/cooling system 
would have moving parts.

force = K/R^n  where K is some constant, with R as distance, and n in 
the range of  2 < n < 4  (n varies with R and with field orentation)

lol. It's so easy coming up with proposes. The catch is to implement it 
for real. As for instance on Moon, where as such the radiation level 
should hit twice as much as in empty space (the reflected). What do you 
have to say in your defence. They don't even have a vehicle to transport 
people to the International Space Station. What are they talking about.
