Sheesh. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Yes, because submarines MOVE and much over 5 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> or 6 knots folds the tube. This is bullshit. A modern fast attack submarine can do Ahead Full at snorkel depth no problem. That's 25 knots. They could attempt Ahead Flank (33 knots), but the screw would cavitate. I know this for a fact... I served on one. You're talking about a 36 inch ventilation, air induction and exhaust stack... not fragile in any sense. Even as far back as 1947, when snorkels were first introduced to US submarines (the first was USS Irex SS-482) in the GUPPY Submarine Conversion Program, the submarines could do 19 knots at snorkel depth, although they were only rated to do 17.2 knots. The only subs that had a limited speed due to snorkel breakage were the German VII and IX U-boats during WWII, with snorkels that folded forward to store in a hull recess. The later telescopic masts were built much tougher, and were partially protected by the conning tower.
