no, dying as they get *cooked by radiation* on the surface of Mars.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2802937/mars-mission-expose-astronauts-deadly-levels-radiation-travelling-red-planet-study-claims.html

Mars mission could expose astronauts to deadly levels of radiation while
travelling to the red planet, study claims

A study from the University of New Hampshire suggests missions to
Mars might be impossible due to an increased risk of radiation
Research suggests when sun is less active cosmic rays increase
This lowers the amount of time an astronaut can safely stay in space
It is predicted solar activity will continue to decrease in future
This will mean male astronauts can only stay in space for 320 days
And for females this is reduced to just 240 days
These would be too short for a mission to Mars, particularly for women
Both would be susceptible to radiation sickness, cancer and more

British 'journalism' at its best.

Musk stated, flat out, that the flight time would be 90 days, and
may drop to 30 as time went by.

Minimum fuel Hohmann orbit is not the only way to get to Mars.

There are lots of ways to die setting up a Mars colony, but the
obvious ones can be dealt with.

A 30 day to 90 day flight to Mars will take a nuclear rocket engine, right ?

Or a Squeezer (only take a week !).

that presentation does not have serious depth of thought in it, it is a
marketing pitch to capture government funds which float and pay for his
other companies, Tesla and SolarCity.

It does not address RADIATION at all, nor food, nor water, nor how to
wash clothes in space.

Really, who needs clothes in a climate controlled spacecraft?

But sending astronauts into space nekkid would cause serious ructions among
fundies and congresscritters! What if they had sex in free fall? The
Republic would fall. Or if they just looked at each other with lust? I'm
assuming a healthy heterosexual crew, but no reason that gay astronauts
could not go along too. Though if you are trying to establish a colony I
assume you would want reproducers.

Even if it was all privately funded someone would pass a law against it if
they were going to be nude during the flight. I suppose they would need to
get dressed for TV broadcasts back to Earth.

problem is they sweat, that that goes off them and condences on the
equipment forming a biofilm. The biofilm creates a slime that coveres
the inside of the space craft, and it becomes very difficult to remove.

Clothes intercept that sweat.

So they cant go naked for long periods.

And come to think about it, isn't dust mostly composed of flakes of human
skin? What will that do to the delicate electronics and plumbing?

"Before we start sending astronauts to Mars or embarking on other
long-term spaceflight missions, we need to be as certain as possible
that we have eliminated or significantly reduced the risk that biofilms
pose to the human crew and their equipment," stated Collins, an
assistant professor in the department of chemical and biological
engineering.
While this research has more immediate implications for astronaut
health, the researchers added that better understanding the biofilms
could lead to better treatment and prevention for Earth diseases.

"Examining the effects of spaceflight on biofilm formation can provide
new insights into how different factors, such as gravity, fluid
dynamics, and nutrient availability affect biofilm formation on Earth.
Additionally, the research findings could one day help inform new,
innovative approaches for curbing the spread of infections in
hospitals," a NASA press release stated.

Landing on Mars not worth the trip.Orbiting Mars and landing on its moons is the way worth going.Man saterlites can make it around trip even if you have to slingshort Jupiter to add stuff to the voyage. China will be first they have $$$$$$ and no GOP Mafia. TreBert

Mars is hardly worth dying for! When you get there you can't even breath the air! It would be something like living on 22nd century Earth!

I think it did. The talk did not cover all aspects of an interplanetary
civilization, just the transportation to and the basic requirements for a
self-sustaining colony on Mars; look how long it took to talk about that in
great detail alone. But I bet SpaceX is working on the other aspects, too.

>> it is a marketing pitch to capture government funds which float and pay

Nonsense. FUD.

>> It does not address RADIATION at all,

Musk addresses the radiation issue in the Q&A section after the talk.
Basically he says that it is not a problem with a little shielding.

>> nor food, nor water,

That is not SpaceX’s main department, but that of other players.

NASA is already working on self-sustaining environments. For example, the
air conditioning and sanitation systems on the ISS is amazing, there are
chemical toilets on the planet already (the “Burning Man” guy asking about
the prospect of “shitty Mars” in the Q&A section obviously did not know
that), and they are successfully growing “space salad” on the ISS:

<http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/space/11795131/Astronauts-declare-first-space-salad-awesome.html>

>> nor how to wash clothes in space.
>
> Really, who needs clothes in a climate controlled spacecraft?

A climate-controlled spacecraft that could be punctured by a micrometeorite
any moment. Besides, astronauts/passengers are people, too, with a natural
pudency.

Washing clothes: As e.g. NASA astronaut Karen Nyberg, and CSA astronaut
Chris Hadfield demonstrated in a video, respectively, astronauts can wash
their hair and brush their teeth in microgravity with little effort. [1][2]
I can see no great difficulty washing clothes in space in a washing machine
designed for microgravity once you have it there (I think the main problem
is designing it and bringing it there). Only maybe more of the precious
water can be saved by developing alternative washing techniques; AIUI from
my practice, for washing clothes the clothes only have to soak up water,
then the washing agent has to dissolve in the water to get the dirt and
sweat out of the threads, and then the soapy, dirty water has to be removed.
Certainly this can be done in space. But probably the best way to solve
this problem would be using special threads in the clothes that cannot get
dirty or sweaty in the first place. [3]

Musk has been beating this drum, very consistently, for quite a number
of years now, and his projects have all been leading up to this. I don't
think it's a ploy; he's serious.

The presentation wasn't at the technical level you or I wanted, but was
aimed at stirring up interest. I would also like to see independent
confirmation of ways to deal with radiation, and the trip time. The
latter, at least, should be easy to confirm. The Independent writer
is simply incompetent.

The claim I've heard regarding the radiation issue is that, with
higher speeds, and magnetic shielding, the burden of a flight wouldad
be about the same as becoming a smoker for a few months, then stopping.
I'd very much like to see independent verification of that.

I really hope he succeeds. No one else seems to being doing as much
for the long term sustainability of the human race.

For a highly readable (albeit True Believer) account of Musk's
projects, try

NASA has hundreds of studies

travel to from is not the problem. Remember on Mars surface there is no
protection, no atmosphere, no magnetic field, it is the same as space.

studies I have read say the dudes on Mars must live about 12 feet
underground 95% of the time to avoid the bad effects of radiation.

Mars obviously can't support humans.
Why is ANY money being

Human life on Mars is not long term sustainable absent the equivalent
of an industrialized nation on Mars.

That's correct. That's why he want to get a million people to move there.
I'd be happier with 10x that number.
