appears to be
light and energy.

Einstein thought the universe closed on itself, that way he thought no energy would be lost into an outside void.  But imagine if it just goes on forever, with just more galaxies on forever.  In his early years, Einstein thought the Milky Way was all there was to the universe.  My has it ever gotten bigger since then!  No signs of an edge have ever been found.  No reason not to believe that new ways of detecting distant objects will be found, and then scientists will see an even bigger universe that they currently know about!
