Which means you have to have a huge pile of machinery and energy to 
get it.

Excavators to dig the ice out of the ground, assuming it is there.

Trucks to haul the ice to the water plant.

Conveyor system to haul the ice from the trucks to the melting pot.

Melting pots to melt the ice.

Filtering system to purify the water.

If the ice is the remains of an ancient sea, then it is likely saline,
so a desalination system.

Tanks to hold the final product.

All of this needs lots of power to operate plus everything needs to
be heavily insulated and heated so the water does not freeze in the
-100 F Martian night and burst all the pipes and tanks.

Then you can think about building the electrolysis plant and the tanks
to store the hydrogen and oxygen you've generated, but these at least
don't need to be heated.

It is easy to arm wave that there is lots of oxygen on Mars and another
thing to actually produce it.

Where do the thousands of tons of steel come from to build all this
stuff?

needn't get oxygen from water.  It's perfectly possible to get it from
CO2 and all you need at that point is a pump and power to run the
'reverse fuel cell' that produces the oxygen.

any(, since you're condensing pure water out.  And you're going to
have to do this, because a lot of the water ice on Mars that isn't at
the poles is subsurface brines.

Then subsurface pipes (more concrete) to take the pure water to the

If you bother to produce O2 from water.  See MOXIE, which produces it
from atmosphere.  The rover experiment will need around 30 watts of
power to get 1-2 grams of O2.  Scale up.

We have to put our hopes in the Musk space program if we are to get to Mars, because NASA doesn't plan to get there during the lifetimes of us older folks.  My father longed to live to learn the mysteries of Mars,  but with NASA dragging its feet, he could not live long enough.

Dr. John Schilling's launch performance calculator is back online. This 
provides a more accurate estimate of payload to orbit. Using it I get a 
reduced payload to LEO using this combined ITS tanker+Ariane 5 system of 178 
metric tons payload to LEO. This is still though enough to fully refuel the 
Ariane 5 stage in orbit for a fast flight to Mars:

smaller implementation of a Mars transport system. This would be useful as a
first flight, exploratory mission crewed by professional astronauts, before

Musk outlined some plans for mars colonisation. He says the plan is to
bring transport costs down by many orders of magnitudes so that the
ticket prices are closer to the cost of a home (so paople can move to
Mars easily).

Musk plans to build mega rocket (bigger than Saturn 5) with 100

To achieve this, there are some concepts that need to be implemented:

Full reusability
Since it takes so long for the return trip, Musk says about 12 re-uses
for the interplanetary ship lasting about 20-30 years.

In-orbit refuelling
The interplanetary ship is launched without fuel, orbits earth after
launch. Second launch bring up fuel, docks to the first ship to transfer
fuel and then interplanetary ship departs.

Tanker version of spacecraft will launch 3 to 5 times to transfer enough
fuel for each interplanetary ship and for each launch window, there
would be many interplanetary ship launched and fueled (so the launch pad
would be busy launching them and the refueling ones.

Produce propellant on Mars
Loading propellant on earth for the return trip from mars costs way too
much.

Right choice of propellant
This one is simple: methane. Hydrogen could also be produced on mars but
very hard to store and requires much bigger tanks.


Musk wants to R&D so that carbon fibre can be used for tanks.
