You reduce that problem by recycling spent uranium fuel.
One trouble with recycling is that you recover plutonium,
and the greenies don't like that.

Recycled fuel costs 2-3 times as much as unrecycled fuel. The gumment
has to get the taxpayer to cover the cost differential. Free market
capitalists are fine with that as long as the money comes from po' folk
but then po' folk can't get their kitchen cabinets refaced or buy jets
and yachts so that destroys the economy and makes billionaires sad,
which is a very very bad thing.

Is that the initial cost, or the life-cycle cost
including the present value of the cost to store
spent fuel for hundreds of years?

Closer to 1.3-1.7 times as much, but overall far better for the environment
by reducing long term toxic contamination and drastically reducing the need
to mine new uranium.

Further by switching to a fast breeder design, the need to recycle used fuel
rods would drop drastically as the fuel rods would remain viable for a far
longer period of time.

Of course, nuclear is not an option for the greenies, as they find it
preferable to simply export the pollution to another country and then
pretend it doesn't occur.

Or fire back up the National Nuclear Reclamation Plant closed under Carter
following the Salt II treaty and process our nuclear wastes cutting it's
hazardous life down to something on the close order of 250 years, while
recovering fuel elements needed for future nuclear needs.

Yet it can't even power a golf cart, jajaja.

Replace years with decades and you might be starting to have a reasonable
measure.

Indeed, I suspect until you can fit a Mr. Fusion to your mobile
machine......electric isn't really going to be a good option.

How many more times are you going to post a link that has nothing to do
with recharging mining equipment?

In actuallity, heavy earth moving equipment IS going electric; it is going
diesel electric like trains.

That technology uses a diesel engine burning diesel fuel,
that turns an onboard generator (think your car's alternator,
only bigger) that powers electric motors, that turn the wheels.
To call that an electric vehicle is a polite fiction. Those
vehicles are diesel vehicles.

I was going to make a comment about this being blazingly obvious, then I

Large earth moving equipment has been diesel-electric for MANY years.
The reason is simple. Unlike a differential in a car that drives two
wheels and when one wheel spins the other looses all torque, large earth
moving gear has electric motors that drive EACH wheel. Then if one wheel
loses traction and spins all other wheels keep supplying torque to drive
forward. This is obviously WAY too much engineering for green warriors
to understand.

Right up until the battery tech gets good enough, and then the diesel tank
and engine and alternator get yanked right out of there and replaced with
a battery and bam, it's electric.

Give it ten years. Fifteen, tops.

How about never absent a blinding new advancement in battery techonology?

Just like fusion power; any day now for the last half century or so.

Perhaps you were not paying attention when kensi posted a link to an
article about the Purdue University scientists who just MADE that blinding
new advancement? She only posted it about three times.

Here it is again:

https://www.purdue.edu/newsroom/releases/2017/Q2/instantly-rechargeable-
battery-could-change-the-future-of-electric-and-hybrid-automobiles.html

Think maybe you might be able to actually retain some information from it
if you read it a fourth time? Or, at the VERY least, learn how to
correctly spell the word "technology"?

What part of "could provide " do you think established they MADE that new
advancement?

Could provide, means it's a possibility at this point.....NOTHING MORE.

Further are you aware of how MUCH electrolyte it would take to even equal
the power capacity of an ordinary Telsa battery pack?

Over 130 GALLONS....................

Then you have to consider that these electrolytes are caustic and extremely
toxic, and any release into the passenger compartment means serious injury
or death, and any release into the environment is a major HazMat spell,
likely leading to roads being shut down, waterways being highly polluted,
plants and animals poisoned, and so on.

Further, if we look at the ordinary gasoline pump it pumps, at most, 10
gallons per minute.....with over 130 gallons to pump.....I don't see
spending a quarter of an hour at the pump as "instantaneous". I wouldn't
even classify it as "fast".

Because that's *never* happened with fossil fuels, right?

Oh, wait.

Yes, it has happened, but fossil fuels are significantly less toxic and
naturally break down fairly quickly.

A whole lot different than something that is going to poison the soil for
decades, and remain a constant source of this toxin as it slowly leeches out
of the soil with each rain.

Without peeking, let me guess... a capacitor "battery"?
