I worked for 12 years in the field, 8 years as a pure design and development engineer and then branched off to CS and management at Bharat Electronics (India's largest electronics company, public sector undertaking). I cut my teeth with a 3 GHz phased array radar, then Russian radars to be converted to IFF. That was a huge challenge and took us years. Mechanical issues, plus the Russian IFF frequency was very low. Did a DME radar antenna from 960-1215 MHz, a range of IFF antennas using stripline dipoles, and most importantly India's low level detection radar antenna system, with integrated IFF. That is still in production. A 53.5MHz space radar antenna, for atmospheric studies, was made as per my design. Plenty of other small stuff, microwave equipment, testing procedures, etc. Having the finest antenna test range (separation 5Km) helped me understand radiation thoroughly. Most of my time at work was spent either there, or on our factory's rooftop, testing the antennas under development. Those were the days... I got enough out of all that to buy tickets for my family to emigrate to Australia and start a new life here. Professionally, in the field of telecom research. My boss and one colleague, they became CMD of the entire BEL. Good!

I still have a 75 pound EMI analizer from 10khz to 22Ghz, about 1990
vintage in the garage, sold off most of the rest.

I havent found any good solutions for VHF - UHF antenna reception in
todays technology, Radio Shack had a good one (1980) with a switch on it
that switched around LC networks, today China makes phoney switches on
crappy antennas. I do have a mil Disk cone antenna, 30mhz to about
1.2Ghz but I have to climb up and get it off the tower, 40' tall,

I ran into an older rf systems guy here, he put in microwave links and
sattilite and radio for Gov, a lot covert stuff, all over the world,
tech type not engineer, but he has a ton of stories. RF engineers are
unique.

India was under Russian influance for quite a while, I have an excellent
graduate math book in English, composed printed in Russia, for Indian
studants, and it is Hard! about 2000 worked problems. I am very
impressed with the level it is at.
