yep, they are two different problems.

The asteroid one,
	detection decreases as size decreases or as distance increases.
	probably cannot do anything if below a certain size, the atmosphere
will burn out most below about 4 inches in diameter

	what to do if the thing is 100 foot across or greater ?

	NASA cannot predict where something will land on Earth due to
atmosphere unless it is Really big, like a few miles big

so, I have not seen anything real that could prevent or change course of
an asteroid in any size range.

with Laser, they cannot focus energy on target long enough.

so What will NASA do, they dont really talk about destroying asteroid,
but they will talk about detection of them, map them.

so if detected, now, there is nothing we can do, and it most likely
cannot predict where it will hit on earth with any accuracy.

problem is getting enough mass up there in time near asteroid to do
something.

Physics problem;

take a 1,000 foot diameter, iron, coming in at 20,000 mph detected at
10,000,000 mi out.  How much time does earth have to get something there
in time to effect a path change ?  How much mass is required to launch ?

(make assumptions where needed, and bound problem where you can)
