As I mentioned, US Amtrak routinely PUSHES its passenger trains.

It does this by placing a dummy locomotive at the front, containing
the driver and conductor.  The dummy locomotive controls the rear
pushing locomotive.

However, these passenger trains are relatively short, consisting
of ten cars or less.  The possibility of buckling would be less
in a string of short cars, but not absent.
