Back then the entire world was split into "free" and communist factions. The Soviets did similar propagandizing with Sputnik and Gagarin. But the moon missions were very valuable scientifically. Also, taxpayer dollars are still being spent to make future moon missions more successful. The NASA GRAIL satellite has mapped the gravity field of the moon in very fine detail to make navigation easier for future lunar landings. The Chinese or the Indians will certainly use this free data for their own lunar missions.
