I think Archie is a classic example of psychological projection.  That
is when someone who has some uncomfortable issue/thought subconsciously
deals with it by attributing the issue to others.  For example, a person
who is uncomfortable about their looks/weight may go around saying "Look
at him/her! S/he is so fat/ugly!"  Another example is a person who starts
to have homosexual thoughts/feelings but believes homosexuality is wrong
(so is uncomfortable with the thoughts) may become a real homophobe.  A 
person who dislikes another may believe the other person hates them.

And he also knows, subconsciously, that he hasn't accomplished anything.
That's the believing both sides of conflicting thoughts you mentioned.
He subconsciously is uncomfortable with having failed at physics, so
he attacks everyone who disagrees with him, accusing them at failing at
physics.  Projection.

In addition to this, he feels he hasn't really accomplished anything
so he accuses everyone who disagrees with him as being failures of
physics.
