John, every age has had a downside with the upside.

Modern science has given us computers. It's also given us code viruses.

Modern science has given us cheap materials. It's also given us a larger 
trash problem because the materials are cheap enough to not recover.

Modern science has given us more power capacity than we ever had in the 
19th century by four orders of magnitude. It's also given us pollution 
and turf wars over oil-rich territories.

Modern science has given us many new treatments for diseases, lowering 
infant mortality, and extending lifetime. It's also given us 
antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Modern science has given us much freer access to information. It's also 
given us encrypted communications channels that terrorists rely on.

If you are expecting science to provide upsides WITHOUT DOWNSIDES, then 
you're a naive child. No technology is free of downsides. For that 
matter, if some alien race bequeathed us some brand spankin' new 
technology, in two generations we'd be cursing them for ever having 
inflicted it on us.
