Hmmm, you say, so what if I had placed the stone years ago? What would it have been in the one year beforehand? Well, B would have been 0.99 miles away, C would have been 1.98 miles away, Z would have been 24.75 miles away. So the further away the stone is, the faster it seems to be moving relative to A. This extends ALL THE WAY out, even beyond the point where the speed relative to A is the speed of light. The speed of light just determines the size of our observable universe, not the size of the universe. Now, it's a simple matter to clock backwards, and you'd quickly figure out that 100 years ago, B was right on top of A. But C would have been right on top of A too! It's twice as far away today but moving twice as fast too. And if you take any other stone you like, you'd find that it was right on top of A 100 years ago. Since this applies to all stones on the whole infinite line, this means that 100 years ago, the whole infinite line would have been at one and the same point. It seems counterintuitive that an infinite thing could be traced to a single point at a finite time in the past, but it's hard to dispute the argument from above. -- Odd Bodkin --- maker of fine toys, tools, tables
