TreBert Senile bullshit; all gasoline engines with any power require an anti-knock compound in their fuel and the lead also greatly reduced valve wear on early valves. Tetraethyl lead was the only practical thing available in Henry Ford's time. Today the valve problem has long been solved by new materials but the anti-knock problem still exists and is addressed by other chemicals in automotive gasoline. A replacement for tetraethyl lead in aviation gasoline has not yet been proven despite years of research. -- Jim Pennino
