The British use the word "dark" when they mean "unseen"; e.g.: The "dark" (UnSeen) side of the moon. 95% of the (spherical) Milky Way can't be seen because we're sitting in a brightly lit "room" with pitch black "windows", and we can't turn down the lights, nor move to the window. Quoting WikiPedia: << The visible disk of the Milky Way Galaxy is embedded in a much larger, roughly spherical halo of dark matter. The dark matter density drops off with distance from the galactic center. It is now believed that about 95% of the Galaxy is composed of dark matter >>
