Of course everything that I tried to convey via prose only accounts for half of the value of that verse. Or perhaps even less. The rest cannot be taken along to the English language because it is a masterful combination of thought and the particular choice of words from Persian language and the particular and powerful way of using those words. A lot is lost in translation even in prose form. So the "poem", still remains behind in Persian. Only the meaning can get taken to the English language. The said verse is the first line of a 9-verse poem. In the 8 lines that comes after, he engages in a remarkable analysis of the feeling he expressed in the first verse, using very powerful and artful ways of transferring related and additional thoughts to the reader. Each line a jewel of its own. On the 7th line, one can infer that he is not young anymore, and this throws the reader back at the first verse and the most probable reason that the woman is hesitating. So she must've been much younger than him. When he uses the word "Tork" to describe her, it does not necessarily mean a woman from Torkie or other Torki speaking areas of Greater Iran. Hafez lived a century after Mongols invaded Iran. Mongols weren't just soldiers. Each soldier lived with his wife and kids as they moved with countless number of horses and livestock toward areas that had grass for their animals to eat. They weren't just troops. So a lot of women from 10 or 15 different countries, from China all the way to Iran, were among the soldiers with their husbands and kids. Almost all these men and women settled in Iran and quickly assimilated into Iranians' way of life. Some of the countries in between China and Iran were various Torks. So Iranians usually referred to Mongols as "Torks" cause the number of pure Mongols were much smaller than the number of wives and husbands from these other countries that had joined them. So this combination had created an amazing variety of women who, in Iran, settled and got mixed yet one more time with Iranians. Their offsprings presented every type of beauty that you could find and imagine in a woman. It was an extremely rare situation for Iranians in that century to observe how the most beautiful women from many countries to their east could enhance the beauty of Iranian women themselves, when their genes mixed. Hafez lived just in the century that these beauties were created in Iran. These women were collectively called "Torks" by Iranians. So when Hafez points to this particular Tork in Shiraz, she must've been one of those amazing combinations which now of course spoke Persian and was an Iranian woman born and raised in Iran. Hafez, as I said, was quite famous in Shiraz. Very few women could resist his influence on them. To this day, as many women visit his grave as men do. And yet, this particular Tork was a superior woman who had hesitated to accept the love of even a man like Hafez. Probably because Hafez was considerably older than her. But who knows, perhaps for other reasons too she hesitated. You never know what goes inside an intelligent beautiful woman's head when she is in the process of evaluating you as a partner for life! I don't think men can understand that at all. Only women do that. And whatever it is that they do in their heads during such evaluations, it is only that evaluation that led to better and better humans. Every line in that poem is a jewel. Packed with art of poetry. When you read it, you find yourself in the presence of a man who's master of creating the most artful combination of Persian, thought, feelings, details, life lessons, insight, anecdotes, complaints, needs, advice, sorrow, regret, .., complete with the correct rhyme and timing. Every line in that poem is like that!
