The trio of Paparios, Michael Moroney and Tom Roberts argue that "The postulate IS the principle!" and that the two words "postulate" and "principle" mean the same thing. I could argue that dictionaries say the two words have very DIFFERENT meanings, but the trio would just argue that dictionaries are for people who do NOT KNOW what words mean. The trio KNOWS what words mean, so they do not need dictionaries. And if the dictionaries do not agree with the trio, then the dictionaries are WRONG. It seemed to me that this couldn't be the first time the difference between "postulate" and "principle" was ever discussed, so I did a Google search for "postulate vs principle." I found only one site that discusses the difference: https://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/35660/is-there-a-difference-between-a-postulate-and-a-principle-in-physics The site asks the question, "Is there a difference between a postulate and a principle in physics?" And the answer is: "A postulate is an (usually fundamental) assumption a writer makes in order to discuss a subject in a coherent fashion. Examples of postulates are the Born rule in quantum mechanics (which defines how the wave function is to be interpreted), or in classical mechanics the existence of a Lagrangian (which defines the starting point of theoretical mechanics). "A principle is a more or less universally observed (usually fundamental) fact. Examples of principles are the second law of thermodynamics (universal dissipation), the principle of relativity (independence of the reference frame), or Heisenberg's uncertainty relation. "A hypothesis is a theoretical assumption made to develop a (usually alternative) theory. Examples are Planck's and Einstein's hypothesis of quantized light, or the existence of supersymmetry. "One can turn a principle or hypothesis into a postulate, but not a postulate into a principle." That is nearly EXACTLY what I argued here. If anyone can find any other discussion of the difference between a principle and a postulate I hope they'll post a link here. Otherwise, I see no point in continuing to argue with people who have their own definitions for words and want only to argue that they are right and dictionaries are wrong. I'm going to do some research. I may start a new thread if I find something experiment or question worth discussing. Otherwise, I see no point in further arguments about word definitions and what Einstein really meant. Ed

His approach is the same as that of a certain "DJMenck" here in the late 1990s. I.e. endless dissection of words, not their meanings (physicists are not lawyers, for better or worse they have very little patience for paying excessive attention to the text, as it's the theory itself and the equations that are really the "meat" and true content. Ed has this road blocked by his refusal to actually learn the subject, so he is reduced to "debating" irrelevancies and claims that are in the "not even false" category. -- Jan

The funny thing is all of those cites uses both postulate and principle of relativity. Go figure!! I think he has some reading problem, where he looks for words that help to defend his opinion, but does not notice the cites are saying the exact opposite of what he intended.

Ed is correct. A postulate is something one pulls out of its ass. A postulate is an assumption. Period. How can anyone argue against that? Fvcking idiots! <shrug>

Different names. Only kings may come up with postulates. Which is matter of fact.

You even published on Sept. 30, your own list of references (13 of them), defining what you say are the postulates where, it is quite clear, they all agree with us and not with your opinion!!!! I will copy only the definitions you published in two posts: 1)"Einstein’s first postulate, called the principle of relativity, states: The laws of physics are the same in every inertial frame of reference." 2)"First postulate (the relativity principle): The laws of physics have the same form in all inertial reference frames. 3)This hypothesis is the Principle of Relativity: All the laws of physics are the same in all inertial reference frames. 4)1. The principle of relativity: All the laws of physics are the same in all inertial frames. 5)1. The Relativity Postulate: The laws of physics are the same for observers in all inertial reference frames. No one frame is preferred over any other. 6) “Principle of Relativity” which is used as a postulate: All the laws of physics are the same in every free-float (inertial) reference frame 7)"The theory of special relativity was derived from two postulates proposed by Einstein in his 1905 paper: Postulate 1. The laws of physics are the same in all inertial reference frames. 8)Einstein’s principle of relativity is as follows: "Fundamental Postulate of Special Relativity: "All the laws of physics, including mechanics and electromagnetism, are the same in all inertial frames of reference." 9)"Postulate 1: The laws of physics have the same form in all frames of reference moving at a constant velocity with respect to one another. 10) There is one more postulate in the Special Relativity theory, namely the “relativity” postulate (also called the Principle of Relativity). All inertial frames are “equivalent.” 11) He based his special theory of relativity on two postulates: 1.The principle of relativity: The laws of physics must be the same in all inertial reference frames." 12)L.T. can be derived on the basis of two postulates or Principles viz. (1) Laws of Physics are of the same form in all inertial frames (Principle of Relativity) 13) Then the Principle of Relativity says: All the laws of physics are the same in every reference frame. You should be able to notice the use of both the words postulate and principle in most of your cites, which you assert disprove us. Edward, you should read what you cite. It appears your sight is going bananas.

NONSENSE! You clearly have not read what we have been saying. (Passing your eyes over words is not reading.) I repeat: All you have to do to understand this is to READ EINSTEIN'S 1905 PAPER. In it, in sections following I.2, you'll see that he repeatedly references the postulates/principles stated at the beginning of section I.2, and he never references the statements in the Introduction. That is, I.2 states the actual postulates used in the derivation of the equations of SR, not the Introduction. It does not matter what Einstein called them, because NOMENCLATURE HAS CHANGED since 1905 -- your use of a 2018 dictionary in an attempt to interpret his 1905 words is USELESS. Not to mention English vs German. Not bothering to read the paper, and then attempting to argue about it, is HOPELESS. Tom Roberts

I will agree with Tom, in my OPINION, you did not read Einstein's 1905 SR paper, or at least you did not understand what was written. You did not even recognize the second statement of the two postulates.
