A reciprocity measurement of muons living longer for us, would be that you effectively ride *with* a muon and measure *our* clocks. That hasn't been done, and in that strict sense indeed there is no direct confirmation of reciprocal "time dilation". We infer it from the theory. Dropping Ed Lake from a tower and checking whether he falls to the ground has not been done either. We infer it from the theory. Dirk Vdm

Probably he does. I certainly do. But Tom is correct to point out that this is not equivalent to a test of “*reciprocal* *time dilation*”. > (I trust your opinion.) I think it is the most direct measurement. No, fortunately they are negligibly small on/near Earth. > yeah the cleanest test is the two spaceships passing in interstellar > space. Can't wait for near lightspeed interstellar travel. Conventionally, and using classical mechanics only, that is not going to happen. The energy requirements are simply prohibitively high. However, it is also not necessary in order to confirm reciprocal time dilation. It is a common misconception that relativistic effects, i.e. effects predicted by the theories of relativity, would only occur at what is often called “relativistic speeds”, i.e. speeds close to the speed of light. But that is NOT so. For example, with dτ = γ dt, then dt = dτ∕γ and (dt < dτ) ← γ(v) := 1∕√(1 − v²∕c²) > 1 ← (v > 0)! It merely is a matter of the precision of measurement. -- PointedEars Twitter: @PointedEars2 Please do not cc me. / Bitte keine Kopien per E-Mail.

This is first order in v/c, and modern lasers can be EXTREMELY accurate. Anyone want to donate ~ $20k? Tom Roberts

Whyzat? They often are absorbed by something. But remember, you are comparing a single photon to a macroscopic spaceship moving at near c where the collision with a single dust grain at near c may produce significant damage with energy equivalent to a small nuclear explosion.

That's why they had deflector shields on their space ships in Star Trek and Star Wars. But, a grain of dust hitting a spaceship at near c will just punch a grain-of-dust sized hole in the spaceship's hull. It cannot trigger a nuclear explosion. A nuclear explosion requires a chain reaction, and there is nothing in the hull of a ship that will cause a chain reaction. Ed

It is not a test of RECIPROCAL "time dilation", because the muon does not make any measurements of earthbound clocks. Of course for consistency with the first postulate of SR, we must invoke "length contraction" in the muon frame to reconcile the muon frame's version of what is observed in the earth frame. Gravity has nothing to do with this. For a muon traveling at > 0.999 c, the effects of earth's gravitation are completely negligible. Tom Roberts

Disregard local curvature index, all objects in this universe are in free-fall. THis being the case, everything are inertial, except those sitting on the surface of earth, being pushed in the upward normal direction by it. Thanks, keep up the good work.

The fact that you cannot read it is irrelevant. IOW: nobody has yet managed to construct two inertial frames [#] and measure "time dilation" in both ways between them. [#] It is true that there are no inertial frames in the world we inhabit (gravitation from massive objects prevents them). But this is physics, and such perfection is not required -- LOCALLY inertial frames are common, and are sufficient for testing SR (which is, after all, now just a LOCAL theory). Tom Roberts

So as usual he is wrong. Hmm. Interesting. So, you claim that H&K proved NOTHING because they were not in "inertial frames" as they flew around the world, accelerating and decelerating and changing altitudes? And that appears to mean that you think Hafele and Keating were just more incompetents who did not understand relativity, since they claimed that their experiments DID confirm velocity and gravitational time dilation. And when I agree with Hafele and Keating you somehow believe that I am ALONE in what I claim about their experiments. > > There certainly are predictions of SR that have never been DIRECTLY > confirmed. Ed Lake's fantasies to the contrary > are just plain wrong. > > [#] This wording directly implies "as measured in their > rest frame". > > Tom Roberts I FULLY AGREE that all clocks tick at "their usual rate" "as measured in their rest frame." Their "usual rate" has been defined as measuring a "second" as "the duration of 9 192 631 770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of the ground state of the cesium 133 atom." Atomic clocks tick at that rate when stationary, when moving and when at different altitudes. They are BUILT to do so. They are BUILT to CHANGE their tick rates at different altitudes and at different velocities so they will ALWAYS COUNT one second to be "9 192 631 770 periods." Einstein's theories say that TIME IS VARIABLE IN DIFFERENT FRAMES, so when the LENGTH OF A SECOND is compared between "rest frames," it will take LONGER to count "9 192 631 770 periods" at the bottom of a mountain versus at the top, and it will take LONGER to count "9 192 631 770 periods" when moving than when "stationary." That way "one second" is always "9 192 631 770 periods." You may disagree, Tom, but that is how atomic clocks work. Ed

DUH! Their first paper says, "From the actual flight paths of each trip, the theory predicts that the flying clocks, compared with reference clocks at the U.S. Naval Observatory, should have lost 40 ± 23 nanoseconds during the eastward trip, and should have gained 275 + 21 nanoseconds during the westward trip." You appear to be saying that comparing "flying clocks" to "reference clocks" that are not flying is not a SR experiment. H&K say otherwise. The abstract for their second paper is as follows: "Four cesium beam clocks flown around the world on commercial jet flights during October 1971, once eastward and once westward, recorded directionally dependent time differences which are in good agreement with predictions of conventional relativity theory. Relative to the atomic time scale of the U.S. Naval Observatory, the flying clocks lost 59 ± 10 nanoseconds during the eastward trip and gained 273 + 7 nanoseconds during the westward trip, where the errors are the corresponding standard deviations. These results provide an unambiguous empirical resolution of the famous clock "paradox" with macroscopic clocks." Again they are saying they compared "clocks flown around the world" relative "to the atomic time scale of he U.S. Naval Observatory." It is a test of SPECIAL relativity. PERIOD. And they are saying that there is nothing reciprocal involved, so "the results provide an unambiguous empirical resolution of the famous clock 'paradox"." In other words, their experiments showed there is no reciprocal velocity time dilation and thus no "paradox." Ed

Take a look at table 1 of the Science paper, where they present the "predicted relativistic time differences". There is a gravitational part and also a kinematic part and the combined value. No, the "gravitational part" is GR and the "kinematic part" is SR.
"noun: kinematics
the branch of mechanics concerned with the motion of objects without reference to the forces that cause the motion."

GR is a more general theory (as its name show) than SR. But that does not mean GR and SR are totally unrelated theories. In fact, as I have told you, GR becomes SR when the gravity is small or absent. This means Hafele-Keating did use GR for predicting their results, PERIOD.

SR is "special" and GR is "general." SR is like an exception to the rule. Both slow down time, but SR does it in a different way than GR. > > This means Hafele-Keating did use GR for predicting their results, PERIOD. If you believe that, then you fail to understand what they did. They weren't concerned with proving that gravity slows down time, their experiment was DESIGNED to show that VELOCITY SHOWS DOWN TIME. They designed their experiment to show that the "Paradoxers" are WRONG in believing that there is a "paradox" (a conflict with the First Postulate) if time moves at different rates in different frames of reference. They confirmed that traveling at different velocities results in different amount of time dilation. Ed

In the Hafele-Keating experiment, the contribution of gravity was on the same order of magnitude than the contribution of speed The predicted gained nanoseconds (comparison of clocks after they reunited): Gravitational East 144 nanoseconds; West 179 nanoseocnds Kinematic East -184 nano seconds; West 96 nanoseconds Net East -40 nanoseconds; West 275 nanoseconds The measured gained nanoseconds Net East -59 nanoseconds; West 273 nanoseconds It is evident BOTH gravity and speed contributed to the result. That means General Relativity.

You seem to be saying that in a physics laboratory gravity is negligible. That is absurd. There has to be some language/translation problem. > > > SR is "special" and GR is "general." Again this is real experimental facts of Physics. > > > > In Earth, within the space of a physics laboratory, the effect of the Earth mass > > is also negligible. > > "In earth"? Our laser table is 8 by 16 feet, and you can be sure the gravity at one of the ends of the table is exactly the same than the gravity at the other end. You clearly have never been into a physics lab, do you? > > > > You, again and again, show the world how little of this you understand. > > > > In the Hafele-Keating experiment, the contribution of gravity was on the same > > order of magnitude than the contribution of speed > > Not true. > Yes it is true, as you could see if you read the papers. > > > > The predicted gained nanoseconds (comparison of clocks after they reunited): > > > > Gravitational East 144 nanoseconds; West 179 nanoseocnds > > Kinematic East -184 nano seconds; West 96 nanoseconds > > Net East -40 nanoseconds; West 275 nanoseconds > > > > The measured gained nanoseconds > > > > Net East -59 nanoseconds; West 273 nanoseconds > > > > It is evident BOTH gravity and speed contributed to the result. Furthermore, you may notice that the predicted gravity gains are different for the eastward and westward directions. Do you know why is that?
