The simple point is that you were wrong when you said: "their mathematical models are evidently not the same mathematical models you use. There was NOTHING AT REST in their mathematical models." The mathematical model is GR, and the frame of reference used by Hafele is the "ECI frame" where the centre of the Earth is stationary. The experiment compared the proper times of two clocks, one at the U.S. Naval Observatory and one that Hafele & Keating took with them. (Actually they took FOUR clocks, but that was just so they could use an average and avoid having the entire experiment depend upon one traveling clock.) The result was that predictions of SR AND GR were in accordance with real world measurements. Hafele wrote in his paper "PERFORMANCE AND RESULTS OF PORTABLE CLOCKS IN AIRCRAFT": "The special theory of relativity predicts that a moving clock will run slow compared with similar clocks distributed at rest and suitably synchronized in an inertial reference system. In addition, the general theory predicts that a clock in a stronger gravitational field will run slow compared with a similar clock in a weaker field." For low coordinate speeds (u^2 << c^2), the ratio of times recorded by the moving and reference coordinate clocks reduces to (1 - u^2/2c^2), where c is the speed of light." This is the relativistic time dilation, whose predictions are shown in Table 1. Then they wrote the following: "General relativity predicts another effect that (for weak gravitational fields) is proportional to the difference in the gravitational potential for the flying and ground reference clocks. If the surface value of the acceleration of gravity is g and the altitude for the circumnavigation is h << R, the potential difference is gh, and Eq. 1 then reads:" (follows Eq 2, which combines relativistic and gravitational time dilation terms. So all your posts on this issue are based in biased and incomplete readings of the references.

H&K were writing about the THEORY. The discussion is about the EXPERIMENTS. In theory, SR is about time dilation at high speeds with no effects from gravity or acceleration. In theory they would fly around the world at the equator, and you would measure distances using the center of the earth. In REALITY, when H&K flew eastward, they flew from Washington's Dulles airport to London, to Frankfurt, to Istanbul, to Beirut, to Tehran, to New Delhi, to Bangkok, to Hong Kong, to Tokyo, to Honolulu, to Los Angeles, to Dallas, and then back to Washington. When they flew westward, they flew from Washington to Los Angeles, to Honolulu, to Guam, to Okinawa, to Taipei, to Hong Kong, to Bangkok, to Bombay, to Tel Aviv, to Athens, to Rome, the Paris, to Shannon Ireland, to Boston, and then back to Washington. So, when they calculated their time dilation estimates before the trip, they didn't use the center of the earth and just compute some straight line. They computed the distances between all those points along the earth's surface, AND they obtained approximate flight altitudes from the airlines. During the trips they got the flight altitudes from the pilots. The closest they got to the equator was Bangkok when flying eastward. Bangkok is 13.7 degrees north latitude. That's about 950 miles from the equator. When flying westward, they stopped a Guam, which is a bit closer to the equator than Bangkok. Ed

Note one thing, that you clearly do not know. Both the predicted and measured results are provided with some ranges (ie the predicted eastward flight kninematic record loss was calculated as −184±18 nanoseconds, where ±18 represents the fact the airplane did not follow the Equator). Again, if you are going to express your opinion, it should be based in a careful study of the science behind relativity. You have been very lousy in doing a good job on this.

The discussion should be about how their experiment confirmed that time dilation is NOT reciprocal. It is NOT reciprocal for SR nor GR. And if people here believe that time dilation IS reciprocal, they need to cite experiments which confirm that. Hafele-Keating DISPROVES it. Ed

What Special Relativity and General Relativity models say is that TIME IS INTERTWINED WITH SPACE (into what is called spacetime). Objects follow geodesic paths through spacetime. Spacetime manifests, under the presence of mass, curvature which even affects the path of light rays. Clock are devices which measure the time dimension. If two identical clocks follow different paths through spacetime, the clock records of each path will be different. This is what causes a higher clock to record more time than a ground clock and this is what causes a faster clock to record less time than a slower clock.

But it also says our views are totally irreconcilable. To me, spacetime is just a mathematical model. It has next to nothing to do with reality. I'm only interested in experiments and how they prove concepts. The Hafele and Keating experiment confirmed SR AND GR. They did it here on earth. Fantasies about "different paths through spacetime" is just talking about a mathematical model. It has nothing to do with the reality of what happened. Ed

In many cases, you *can* use the SR math for the velocity portion of GR, and the gravity-only part of GR and combine them, and it will be very close to what pure GR predicts. Okay, but Hafele and Keating did not describe things that way. Hafele described things this way: "The special theory of relativity predicts that a moving clock will run slow compared with similar clocks distributed at rest and suitably synchronized in an inertial reference system. In addition, the general theory predicts that a clock in a stronger gravitational field will run slow compared with a similar clock in a weaker field." > > In many cases, you *can* use the SR math for the velocity portion of GR, > and the gravity-only part of GR and combine them, and it will be very > close to what pure GR predicts. Models need to be validated, but once that is done you can use it to make predictions. That includes the math in the model, it is part of the model.

That includes the math in the model, it is part of the > model. These arguments over words are going nowhere and accomplishing nothing. H&K's experiment was mainly about velocity time dilation (VTD), i.e., special relativity. They could have done gravity time dilation experiments at home. By flying eastward with the spin of the earth and then westward against the spin of the earth they showed that VTD is NOT RECIPROCAL, and they showed that the earth's spin causes VTD. AND they showed that the amount of VTD can be changed by traveling with or against the spin of the earth. Yet, somehow, people here believe that VTD is reciprocal. I keep asking people here to name an experiment which shows that velocity time dilation is reciprocal. Or that motion is reciprocal. I list that belief as the #1 DUMBEST belief in physics: http://oldguynewissues.blogspot.com/2018/02/the-10-dumbest-ideas-in-physics.html People here seem to believe that time dilation is reciprocal even though ALL experiments say it is NOT. How can they justify their beliefs??? Ed

That's because you insist on using your own definitions and not the ones science uses. >H&K's experiment was mainly about velocity time dilation (VTD), i.e., special >relativity. They could have done gravity time dilation experiments at home. They could NOT disregard the gravitational effects. They were using airliners flying at ~30,000 feet and the gravitational effect from doing so were significant. If they were doing the experiment using a sea level train, car or ship route they could ignore the gravitational effects. (but the velocity effects would be that much less....) >By flying eastward with the spin of the earth and then westward against the >spin of the earth they showed that VTD is NOT RECIPROCAL, and they showed >that the earth's spin causes VTD. AND they showed that the amount of VTD >can be changed by traveling with or against the spin of the earth. The experiment was NOT reciprocal. Not only the gravitational effects, but the net speed relative to an inertial point was the three clocks went around the center of the earth fast, faster and fastest IN THE SAME DIRECTION! The planes were all slower than the earth's rotation so the clocks ALL moved in the same direction relative to the inertial reference point. For the H-K experiment, the rotation of the surface of the earth could NOT be ignored, it was a major component of the velocity, so they had to use an inertial reference. >Yet, somehow, people here believe that VTD is reciprocal. If it wasn't, then the first postulate of relativity would be false, and Einstein's 1905 SR paper would have no basis, so no SR at all. We'd be here arguing about some other odd high velocity motion theory that some Alternate-Universe Einstein came up with. >I keep asking people here to name an experiment which shows that velocity >time dilation is reciprocal. Or that motion is reciprocal. Motion reciprocal is easy. Experiments done in motion vs. "stationary" having the same results. Experiments on the ISS do not require compensation for the fact it orbits the earth at 17,000 miles per hour, unless part of the experiment takes place on earth's surface or elsewhere (then SR/GR time dilation compensation is needed). You yourself seem to be fine with the fact the "stationary" earth orbits the sun which orbits the Milky Way, which moves..." yet you have problems using some other object which moves relative to the earth as a reference. That's a weird double standard! Of course one "experiment" which is completely consistent with SR length contraction and time dilation is ordinary magnetism from electric currents in wires. Magnetism can be completely explained as electric fields modified by SR effects of the electrons moving relative to the nuclei of the metal of a wire. Even though the electrons move quite slowly at ordinary currents! (I find this quite cool!) > I list that >belief as the #1 DUMBEST belief in physics: http://oldguynewissues.blogspot.com/2018/02/the-10-dumbest-ideas-in-physics.html Can you PROVE that it is 'dumb' with actual experiments? That is, actually disprove SR time dilation? If you can actually do that, I'll personally pay for your airline ticket to Sweden to pick up your Nobel Prize. >People here seem to believe that time dilation is reciprocal even though >ALL experiments say it is NOT. No, that is your dumb claim. All experiments are consistent with SR as proposed by Einstein, within the domain of SR. Including reciprocal time dilation. > How can they justify their beliefs??? Because they have actually done the experiments?
