It's apparent that you can't think these things through that well. Not a good advertisement that the Galilean equations must be correct, even if they aren't relevant in this situation. If the earth's circumference is exactly 24,701 miles at the equator, how far will an airplane flying at 31,680 feet (exactly 6 miles) have to fly, to circle the earth exactly once at the equator? Hint: 24,701 miles is at sea level. >Therefore, I do not have to believe your nonsense. You have never seen >anyone measure the equator, so you are just pretending that you know >something. I have been at the equator, does that count?

So was the circumference of the earth increasing or decreasing while you were there? Here is what you do. Take the circumference at the equator and divide it by 6.28, then add your six miles to that. Then multiply that by 6.28, and you will have the number of miles the plane traveled. I know this seems difficult, but it can be done. There are schoolchildren in junior high who are working problems like this every day. You can do it if you try.

Well if you’re going to do that, then you won’t have flown 24,701 miles because Quito, Ecuador will have moved to a different place while you were flying. This happens because Quito is attached to the ground and the ground is moving. Thus is what causes the sun to appear to rise and set. I believe what measurements say, not what some arbitrarily selected equations say. I’ll do this just about every time. And if equations disagree with corroborated measurements, then the equation is wrong, every time. > I use the Galilean transformation equations, which do not have a length > contraction. You, you couldn’t be bothered. And ok, so you’ve decided there are some equations you like because they don’t feature something you don’t like. So just on the basis of what you like and don’t like, you say these equations will represent reality for you. That’s fine. If they could have done better, why don't you show them how? As far as I am concerned, I might use 24,000 miles like I learned in grade school. What I look for is what the equations say. Your equations say that the circumference of the earth changes whenever an airplane passes overhead. The Galilean transformation equations say the circumference of the earth is the same from either frame of reference. So the Galilean transformation equations are right.

DUMB! Well, actually, the pilot of the plane sees the plane going faster than 500 mph. I know how complicated this must seem to you. It is called reality. If you get tired of reading Harry Potter books, you might want to consider reality some time. > > > So the Galilean transformation equations are right. > > But they can't explain experiments which confirm time dilation; hence, > they are wrong. > What do you mean they can't explain experiments. If a clock is faster or slower than another clock, you use two different sets of Galilean transformation equations. If you want to use the time of a clock in the other set of equations, you have to convert its time to the time of the other clock. It is not difficult. Students in junior high work problems like this. > > I said that the plane was taking off from Quito, Ecuador, and was going > > to land at Quito, Ecuador. I don't pretend anything. If you are circumnavigating the globe, you start and stop in the same place. If you want to pretend that is complicated, go ahead and pretend it is complicated.

Why would you have the pilot fly with a broken clock? It is irresponsible at best and could potentially be a safety issue. If the clock is broken as you say, the airspeed reading will be garbage so the pilot may slow the plane below the stall speed, for example. Also, scientists investigating relativity such as the Galilean or Lorentz transforms, or anything else for that matter, would NEVER use a broken clock like that. It will ruin all measurements that depend on it.

Argue with Hafele and Keating. They were the ones who reported the results of the experiment.

Well, see, what you do with the Galilean transformation equations if you have two rates of time that are different is to put them in separate sets of Galilean transformation equations. So suppose that the clock on the airplane shows 49 hours after the flight, and the clock on the ground shows 49.5 hours after the flight, then an observer on the ground would calculate that the airplane was traveling 500 miles per hour, and the pilot of the plane, while he is still on the runway after landing, divides the distance traveled by the time on his clock and gets a faster velocity. How do you explain it? Well, of course, if you are a scientist and read a lot of Harry Potter books, you are going to believe that there was a length contraction. Common people like me would believe that he got a faster speed for the airplane because his clock was slower than the clock on the ground.

Now why would I do that? I already told you these are ideal clocks, they keep perfect lockstep when sitting next to each other. I know there must be some other explanation, because the Galilean transform states t'=t, while I already see t' != t. > So suppose that the clock on the airplane shows 49 hours after the >flight, and the clock on the ground shows 49.5 hours after the flight, >then an observer on the ground would calculate that the airplane was >traveling 500 miles per hour, and the pilot of the plane, while he is still on the runway after landing, divides the distance traveled by the time on his clock and gets a faster velocity. How do you explain it? I investigate further, of course. Let's call the two ideal clocks A and B. As I said, when sitting next to each other at the airport, they tick in perfect lockstep with each other. I repeat the experiment, first with A on the plane and B stays on the ground, and A records 49 hours, while B records 49.5 hours. I repeat with B on the plane and A on the ground. This time B records 49 hours, while A records 49.5 hours. I repeat several more times, some times I have A on the plane with B on the ground, and sometimes B on the plane with A on the ground. It turns out each time the clock on the plane records 49 hours, while the ground clock records 49.5 hours, no matter which clock is on the plane/ground respectively. And between flights I check to be sure they tick in lockstep, and they do. So how do you explain that?
