Well, I am sorry, but reality shows us that if a clock is slower than another clock, using the time of that clock to compute speeds results in faster speeds. If you can show me an exception, I would certainly be interested in hearing about it. So now suppose we get an astronaut to Mercury, which is not as impossible as it might at first seem. The temperature on the dark side of Mercury is colder in some places than the temperature on earth. Then that astronaut will be going 30 miles per second relative to the sun. So relative to earth time, a clock on Mercury would be slower for two reasons: It is moving at 30 miles per second relative to the sun, whereas, the earth is only moving at 18 miles per second, and the gravitation is greater closer to the sun. So we definitely have two clocks with different rates, one on earth and one on Mercury. Now these are what scientists call ideal clocks, both manufactured on earth. So what do scientists and the equations they use tell us? From earth the clock on Mercury APPEARS slower, and from Mercury, the clock on earth APPEARS slower. But they are really going at the same rate because a second is the same number of transitions of a cesium atom both places. What do the Galilean transformation equations say? From earth, the clock on Mercury is slower, and from Mercury, the clock on Mercury is slower. So who should I believe? Golly, this is a tough one. Let's see. I think I will believe the Galilean transformation equations.

Galilean transform states that t'=t, so the clock on Mercury is the same as the one on Earth. In fact t'=t states that time is the same everywhere in the entire universe. >So who should I believe? >Golly, this is a tough one. Let's see. If you ignore the gravitational effects and consider only the velocity Mercury has (relative to the sun) of 30 miles/second, and Earth (relative to the sun) of 18 miles/second, you are trying to use both the Galilean and Lorentz transforms at the same time! No wonder why you are so confused.

Well, no. The way you work the problem is, you use two sets of Galilean transformation equations, one set for the clock on earth and one set for the clock on Mercury. Or maybe you do not believe the experiments that show that greater gravitation causes a clock to slow down. So for earth we have
x'=x-vt
y'=y
z'=z
t'=t
For the clock on Mercury we have
x'=x-(v2)n
y'=y
z'=z
n'=n
t is the time of the clock on earth. n is the time of the clock on Mercury. (v2) is the velocity of S' relative to S according to the time of the clock that shows n. Sorry, but you can't put the two clocks in the same set of Galilean transformation equations with the same velocity v without having a length contraction. Now possibly you could do this. This just occurred to me.
x'=x-vt
y'=y
z'=z
t'=t-vt/c
x = x'-v't'
y = y'
z = z'
t = t'- v't'/c
v'= -vt/t'
v = -v't'/t
That would seem to eliminate your main objection of having a separate set of equations for each clock. As far as I can tell, this transformation seems to hold together. And it does not seem to have a length contraction. Too bad we do not have some people who could do algebra to check it out. Well, perhaps in a few centuries there might be someone in India or Bangladesh or somewhere who would be capable of working the math.

Or maybe you do not believe the experiments that >show that greater gravitation causes a clock to slow down. And here is where you add the GR gravitational effect to the Galilean transform. Therefore, t' != t. So make up your mind. Do you want to use the Galilean transform or something else with gravitational time dilation added? If you use the Galilean transform, then you must accept t'=t and therefore reject any time dilation. This works for any two good clocks anywhere in the universe. According to t'=t, the time on ANY good clock ANYWHERE will display the same time as ANY OTHER GOOD CLOCK. So do you accept the Galilean transform, and therefore t'=t? It would mean that you accept that ALL good clocks ANYWHERE, whether it's Earth, Mercury or Mars, or the planet ZZYZXPL, ALL display the EXACT SAME TIME. > So for earth Or anywhere else, >we have > x'=x-vt > y'=y > z'=z > t'=t See? Well, it is 300 and some degrees on the side closest to the sun, so there would be a zone on the dark side with a temperature comparable to earth, since the coldest temperature on Mercury is like 150 degrees below zero at the middle of the equator on the dark side.

Well, according to the Galilean transformation equations it is.

Well, yes, I have. Actually, Johannes Kepler calculated it back in the 1500's.

We can calculate the gravitation from the fact that Mercury is moving faster in its orbit than earth. The gravitation is greater at the distance of Mercury from the sun. The thing to remember is that if you put a golf ball in orbit around the sun at the altitude of Mercury from the sun, the golf ball will be going 30 miles per second, the same as Mercury.

Well, I think I have resolved your main objection. I can use t and t' in two sets of Galilean transformation equations without using n'.

Well, but you need to refute the equations I gave above.
These might be the famous Winn transformation you keep talking about.

Well, we already discussed that. The gravitation on Mercury is greater. That makes the clock go slower.

Well, here, I have some new equations for you to delete.
x'=x-vt
y'=y
z'=z
t'= t - vt/c
x = x' - v't'
y = y'
z = z'
t = t' - v't'/c
v'= -vt/t'
v = -v't'/t

It must be. I just thought of it. Gary Harnagel has been telling me that I have a Winn transform for a long time, and I have been telling him that I am just using two sets of Galilean transformation equations, but this puts it into a form with only t and t' the way he was insisting on.

Kepler knew this number (0.39 Earth orbital radius = 1 Mercury orbital radius), but he couldn't have known more, not without some other means of measuring the orbital radius of a planet. This is because after Kepler died, we found a method of measuring the orbital radius of the Earth. Since Kepler's math was correct, as was his 0.39 ratio (now 0.39 AU with 1 AU now known to be ~150 million km), once we discovered the size of 1 AU, we could plug in that number into Kepler's formulas and come up with about 30 miles/sec for the average Mercury orbital speed. Something Kepler himself couldn't do.

Well, yes, I can understand why scientists of today would have such animosity toward Kepler. Why did people like Kepler and Copernicus upset established science by saying that the earth was orbiting the sun? Why couldn't they just accept what was being taught by respected scientists of their day?
No wonder Galileo spent his last years under house arrest. He just could not show the proper respect to established science. So what did you decide about the equations I posted:
x'=x-vt
y'=y
z'=z
t'=t-vt/c
x = x' - v't'
y = y'
z = z'
t = t' - v't'/c
v' = -vt/t'
v = -v't'/t
I have to respect Gary Harnagel. He took time out from deleting equations to express his opinion. You and Odd Bodkin just ignored the equations and expressed your ability to find fault with me personally.

Followers of Tycho Brahe, the most pre-eminent astronomer of his time, were the ones who turned Galileo in to the pope for saying that the earth was rotating on its axis instead of the sun revolving around the earth. That is very perceptive, Python. A clock on Mercury is slower than a clock on earth, and a clock on Pluto is faster than a clock on earth. That is because of the difference in gravitation.

I do not think anyone will be able to >convince me that the Galilean transformation equations are not the >correct equations for relativity. Not really an answer. Odd asked 'What would it take to convince you that the Galilean transformation equations are not the correct equations for relativity?', not whether anyone could convince you. My answer to the opposite question, what would it take to convince me the Galilean transform is correct (not merely a good low speed approximation): It would take scientific observations and experiments with their results compared to the predictions of the Galilean transform and to that predicted by SR (Lorentz Transform) and GR, with the results clearly matching the Galilean transform predictions and not the others. However this is very unlikely to happen as science has been building things like the GPS system and particle accelerators that assume that SR and/or GR are correct, not the Galilean Transform. While I am not a scientist myself, I am a firm believer in the Scientific Method. Unfortunately, you seem to consider 'scientists' as some sort of enemy rather than people whose jobs are to find out how our universe works.
