Physics is a study of certain mathematical models, there is no way around it. There is no such thing as developing ideas in physics "without mathematics". If you do that, you are doing philosophy which has its own strict rules. > My understanding is that a close friend, Marcel Grossman helped him with > the math. Yes, but this happened for a very different reason than you think. It's not because the mathematics was not essential, it's because differential geometry (known as "absolute calculus" back then) was not known to physicists AND Einstein knew that he needed it, badly. That's why he asked his friend about it. He would have used it himself from square one if he had been familiar with it. You have this obsession/agenda/monomania about mathematics being somehow "FAPP ignorable" in physics. This approach will NEVER work. You'll be forever running in circles here. -- Jan

Ed Lake obtusely, and conveniently, consistently mis-interprets Einstein's quote regarding the mathematicians. It was tongue in cheek, he was actually PRAISING and thanking them for their contributions; paraphrased, "My theory is so deep, I didn't see all the ramifications. Others have delved deeper, they've discovered things I missed, I'm grateful for their efforts." Which is rather inconvenient for Lake's thesis- -- Rich

"For v/c << 1, Eq. 1 can be approximated by df/f_0 ≈ −v^2>/2c^2"
Hm. It seems quite good.
About the twin paradox, here's another: triplets.
https://www.google.com/search?q=twin+paradox+triplet+paradox
Here's one that frames the idea similar to what
I have here: http://article.sciencepublishinggroup.com/html/10.11648.j.ajmp.s.2015040201.15.html
Leus, "Triplet Paradox in Special Relativity and Discrepancy with Electromagnetism",
which is to send two observers in opposite directions
and then when they return to meet they're the same age.
But, setting either constant, they each accelerated
away from each other. Basically there's the idea that
when the moving frame has enough relativistic mass
that it is more than the mass of the abandoned frame,
the clocks go back to absolute motion's redshift/blueshift.
"Since any asymmetry depending on the direction
of the motion – whether to the right or to the left
from the platform along x axis – would violate the
idea of the homogeneity and isotropy of space," –
explains Charles – "you have to admit the following ...".
Here I'd add emphasis about "the idea of the homogeneity
and isotropy of space".
From the "CADO Reference Frame" page:
"It can be immediately seen from the CADO equation
that if at any instant , either v or L is zero, then CADO_T
is equal to CADO_H. I.e., if, at any instant in the traveler's
life, he is stationary with respect to his twin, then he will
agree with her about their respective ages, regardless of
how far apart they are. Or, if at any instant they are co-located,
they will agree about their respective ages, regardless of
whether or not they have any relative motion at that instant. "
This is teleparallelism of a sort and for space contraction.
Here's another idea, the doublet.
Two identical worlds send a traveler each to the other
at the same time. They arrive at the same time.
When the travelers passed they had the same time, too.
Now reduce the distance to zero.
Another one is the double-blind. A leaves and
then a coin is flipped whether B joins or A returns.
Aren't they the same age?
https://arxiv.org/pdf/1002.4154.pdf Grøn, "The twin paradox and the principle of relativity"
Here's an idea for an experiment to test if "space contraction"
is real. Attach to a rigid frame a counter and on the other side
a jet (eg a rocket or hose) and run a light path back and forth
from the counter that emits a signal in light and counts returns,
i.e., detects changes in length in the path. Then run the jet
and watch the counter for that space was contracted.
It might make as much sense to use a sort of ion stream and see
that a particle accelerator's output to a free target has then
the space measured between the outlet and target, also
"what's causing the stress fractures in the linac shell",
here in a context of "radiation reaction force",
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham%E2%80%93Lorentz_force .
Another one is the unbounded clones, send one after another
the clones that each keep time with respect to each other,
that as the distance goes to zero the clone that's last leaving
passes the clone first returning and their clocks don't differ
(about that they don't match).
In a particle model, these twins as particles basically pull
the destinations together ("space contraction"). These
hypothetical particles basically reflect a potential.
There are many confounding thought experiments to
complement the data including measured clock differences
with respect to travel and gravity's potential.

this is where you go off the rails and I am not
going to explain it to you yet again.

Hmmm. About the only one disagreeing with me in this thread
is you.

the editors and reporters are exactly that and not scientists.

yes that is my argument. But it is not based on my opinion.
It is based on reading Einstein's own writings. It is also
based on having done such calculations. Also, isn't telling
that professional Physicists happen to agree with me?
Ask them who is being absurd here.
Enjoy,
Ed

It does not. In fact, it says the exact opposite. You need to read past the wrong subtitles. The key part is this: | […] Professor Einstein apologized for speaking in German. This sentence will become important later on. | Velocity of Light Variable This subtitle ranges from misleading to just plain wrong, because: | The special relativity theory arose from the question of whether light had | an invariable velocity in free space, [Einstein] said. Most certainly he did not say that, but the original meaning was lost in translation from German or ignorance of the reporter. For the proper term is “invariant”; it has been then and is till today, in English *and* German. | The velocity of light could only be measured relative to a body or a | coordinate system. He sketched a coordinate system K to which light had | the velocity C. Here we can see the ignorance of the reporter with regard to physics very clearly. Not only would Einstein have used the *small* letter “c” as he did in all his writings after 1907 ¹) (and the reported talk took place in 1921), also to avoid confusion with the labels for coordinate system for which he used uppercase letters (in his papers and there). But also he would not have referred to the velocity of light, but the SPEED of light (velocity is a vector quantity: it has a magnitude – speed – and a direction). The original meaning is lost in translation and ignorance of the reporter because by the reporter’s own account the talk was given in German where there is only one noun, „Geschwindigkeit“, for both English nouns (one may use the compound, „Geschwindigkeitsvektor“, to refer to the vector quantity, velocity, explicitly, in German). (I am a physics student whose native language is German, so contrary to the reporter I know what I am talking about.) | Whether the system was in motion or not was the fundamental principle. This sentence does not make any sense, unless it is a misprint that really should have been the relative clause “[light had the velocity C], whether the system was in motion or not, was the fundamental principle.” | This had been developed through the researches of Maxwell and Lorentz, | the principle of the constancy of the velocity of light having been based | on many of their experiments. But did it hold for only one system? he | asked. | He gave the example of a street and [text clipped] If the coordinate | system K was introduced, moving with velocity V, did light have the | velocity of C there? When the light traveled the system moved with it, | so it would appear that light moved slower and the principle apparently | did not hold. | Many famous experiments had been made on this point. Michelson showed | that relative to the moving coordinate system K1, the light traveled with | the same velocity as relative to K, which is contrary to the above ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ | observation. How could this be reconciled? Professor Einstein asked. (Again, _speed_, not velocity.) | How to Define Relative Time | | The answer lay, as he said, in the dependency of time on the co-ordinate | system. […] So Einstein did NOT say that the speed of light would not be invariable/invariant, but he said that if it would not be invariant, then there would be a problem, and he showed that the problem could be avoided by considering more carefully what is meant by “time”. This sounds exactly as he wrote in “On the Relativity Principle and the Conclusions Drawn From It” (1907/1908), of which the official translation is as follows: ,-<https://einsteinpapers.press.princeton.edu/vol2-trans/267> | | […] Michelson and Morley's experiment had actually shown that phenomena | agree with the principle of relativity even where this was not to be | expected from the Lorentz theory. It seemed therefore as if Lorentz's | theory should be abandoned and replaced by a theory whose foundations | correspond to the principle of relativity, because such a theory would | readily predict the negative result of the Michelson and Morley | experiment. [5] | Surprisingly, however, it turned out that a sufficiently sharpened | conception of time was all that was needed to overcome the difficulty | discussed. […] > [that the VELOCITY (not the speed) is frame variable] is true, Not in the sense that you are referring to, and certainly in no sense that Einstein referred to in the reported talk (as he did not discuss general relativity there). > this has been known for hundreds of years , google "light aberration". Instead, the aberration of light is observational evidence that the speed of light IS locally CONSTANT and that there is no *dragged* luminiferous (light-carrying) aether. In fact, before more precise measurement methods were available, the aberration of light was USED to estimate the value for the constant speed of light to be the equivalent of ca. 301'000 km∕s (Bradley 1729). <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_of_light#History> <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aberration_of_light> > Face it, Ed, you are a cretin.
